Yamaha should make phones. They make everything from motorcycles to musical instruments and it's all great quality poo poo even if it's all totally different divisions. Fwiw I think my S7 is an all around pretty decent phone. I'd rather have to clear my entire system cache for LED notifications to work again (after an update), than like, have to shake my phone until the boot loop stops or something (HTC ftw!!). fartzone_42069 fucked around with this message at 23:37 on May 21, 2017 |

UPDATE: YeahTubaMike posted:My phone is arriving today though! I could always just order the G5+, use the M8 in the interim, and then return the M8 once the G5+ arrives... After a series of hilarious update-related misadventures, I decided to return my phone and buy a Moto G5+. It'll be here tomorrow. Thank you to the numerous posters who steered me in the right direction.

This may have been discussed here ages ago, but I don't believe it's really come up in the last few pages: I just ordered a Pixel at long last (to replace my aging HTC One M8) and while I'm confident it's the best option on the market right now for what I want in a phone, and I've figured out the other accessories like an extra long charging cable (amazon basics) and a case (either one of the Spigens or a Parallax probably), I still need to figure out what kind of screen protection I'd like. I'm not one of those people who is comfortable with a naked screen. I didn't know this before, but apparently the Pixel has a very slight curvature to it's screen like a less extreme version of a design language a particular competitor is really big on - which means tempered glass screen protectors are kind of in a rough state for the Pixel as well from what I can tell. There seems to be a few different approaches one could take: go with something like the smaller glass protectors and hope that the screen-only profile helps avoid haloing problems by being flush only with the flat parts, or one of the full front ones that have the colored edges that can essentially hide if there's less than complete edge adherence (but apparently these don't usually have adhesive in the middle, meaning gaps can form and stuff may make it under somehow), or one can just give up on glass entirely and regress back to plastic film style protectors. So I figured I'd ask you guys, is there any particular screen protection scheme you guys are fond of for the Pixel? (Black, non-XL if it matters)

I guess you can set up shortcuts for assistant now Whenever you deal with Google Assistant you have to deal with the problem that there are different versions of the Assistant running on different platforms. Thus far, shortcuts only work on Google Home and Android phones with Android 6.0 (Marshmallow) or later. It would be nice if Google cleaned up this mess with a version of the Assistant that does the same things whether you’re talking to it on Home, Allo, your cellphone or a Google Wear device. How to set up a shortcut The interface for setting up shortcuts is buried in the Google Home app. Tap the list icon (three horizontal bars, AKA the hamburger icon) on the upper left of the screen in the Home app. Then tap “More settings” and scroll down to “Shortcuts”. Tapping “Shortcuts” brings you to the page where you can create your own. Creating a shortcut involves entering your own launch command in one text box and the command string the Assistant recognizes and executes in another. The shortcut connects the two and the Assistant will execute the command string whenever you give it the launch command. Google provides several examples to help you get started. You can replace the text in the examples with your own, tap save and the Assistant will keep both your new command and the example you used to create it. This is a good way to get started until you become comfortable with the commands that work with the Assistant. You also have the option of setting up a second launch command in case you’d like two ways to trigger the same action. If you set up a shortcut and then find yourself giving the Assistant the wrong launch command, you can enter the one you say by mistake in the second launch-command box, keep the original, and not have to worry about which one is right.

The implications of retina being easy to fake with a picture are worse than fingerprint since it's pretty drat easy for someone to obtain a high quality picture of your face and then print it out. Yeah, if someone grabs your phone when you aren't around it's not going to do them a ton of good. There's a whole lot of stuff in-between though. At any rate, Samsung touted this as being much better than the facial recognition unlock and it really isn't. It can be fooled the same way, you just have to stick contacts on a picture. Use a complex pin if you want utmost security. Use fingerprint if you want decent security against most issues with convenience. Retina offers no more convenience than fingerprint and is far easier to fake. It's just another feature that Samsung crammed in that really doesn't make the device better.
