I think a lot of viewers just want to feel comfortable, when the whole point of Twin Peaks has always been that comfort is a thin layer on top of a gruesome darkness.

Ginette Reno posted:I wouldn't say I loved it but I didn't hate it either. It's so much more like FWWM than the show, so if you came expecting more Twin Peaks you're probably gonna be largely disappointed. Lynch wasn't joking when he said the movie would be important. What he meant by that was the show would be a lot more like the movie than the old show. Mulholland Dr and Lost Highway are both two great movies that make enough sense for you to understand the emotional beats of the plot even without close analysis

I feel like a lot of people forget that more than half the first season is a meditation on grief, loss, depression, substance abuse, and suffering through unfulfilling relationships. The show seemed lighter because Coop emphasizes the joy you can experience during/in spite of/past the suffering. But now we aren't in such times. It's rougher, harder, scarier, more depressing. And Lynch doesn't have to hold back for TV censors anymore.

The smoke monster in the box is all your expectations for what a Twin Peaks revival should be bursting through the television and ripping your goddamn face off. Honestly I don't know why anyone would walk into any David Lynch project with any preconceived notions other than "he gonna do what he do."

Magic Hate Ball posted:It's weird that people are getting hung up on the purpose of the glass box. i mean it's one of the few things that's explicitly laid out in the first four episodes. A secret billionaire is bankrolling a top secret project to monitor a space for supernatural activity. This may or may not be linked to Ben Horne, who says something about a a person in New York funding the Great Northern's spa. The project successfully finds what it's looking for, and some people die. We see Coop in the box, shown chronologically before the young couple are murdered, so I assumed the spirit was somehow following Coop.

General Dog posted:So is it made more explicit in episode 4 that Dougie was BOB and friends' creation? I'd assumed it was something Mike had made as a failsafe, since Dougie was unable to move his arm right before he got zapped to the lodge. I know lynch can tend to be a blunt with his clue. "When you get there you will already be there" Is this just referring to Danzig? "Is it future or is it past?" Does some part of this story not take place in the current timeline?

eSporks posted:I'm not too sold on it being either one ATM. The arm is not something I picked up on, but that combined with the ring being associated with Mike could point that way. There is only one time-line. The Black Lodge/Waiting Room/White Lodge are non-linear. I've always interpreted it as such: Once you enter the Black Lodge, you are in the Black Lodge, and so can appear in any iteration of the black lodge, past present and future. Hence Coop being with Laura in FWWM. However Coop is alive in the Black Lodge, he is not a resident nor spirit, so if he leaves the Black Lodge, he will no longer aplear in any visions of it, because he will be in linear time again.

The obscured nudity in front of the glass box struck me as weird given that Lynch fired tv Donna for suggesting that they could do the bar scene in Fire Walk With Me without her getting her boobs out. I guess he is mercurial about boobs.

I think the two moments you specifically quoted where to emphasize the timeless-ness of The Black Lodge to remind old fans and instruct new viewers while also playing with the cyclical nature of Coop's time in The Black Lodge, but it may also be playing with Coop & Doppleganger.

Like, Lara Flynn Boyle did multiple nude scenes the same year as fwwm, iirc. I had always heard it was a dispute over the direction of her character and something relating to her off screen relationship with Kyle McLachlan.

FWWM was the last note in the Twin Peak symphony so this is just continuing off of that note. This new incarnation of Twin Peaks is a delightful blend of the depressing dread of FWWM and the goofiness of the TVS show (Everything involving Dougie, Michael Cera, etc...). The show is 100% david lynch being david lynch so I don't understand why anyone would want anything less. Cooper's adventures from the black lodge back to our earthly plane felt like something out of a 90s adventure game. Especially when going about that weird plug. Hawk's conversations with cancer stricken log lady made me uber sad. Jerry Horne / David Patrick Kelly running a pot business in WA is absolutely perfect. I will fight anyone who disagrees. I've only finished episode 4 which are all the episodes available to me from the showtime channel add-on on Amazon. I assume the rest of the episodes will drop at a later date? I forget which episode it was after marathoning the 4 in quick succession but do we know who the people headhunting Real Cooper with the sniper rifle are? Are they a separate party from Danzig Cooper, like the group that Dougie's wife mentioned being able to pay back with the casino winnings?

Episodes 3 and 4 stuff: The face ripping spirit was caught on video but Coop wasn't from the look of it. I was thinking it was maybe because he didn't have a physical body yet but then it's implied that the sex-havers barely missed seeing him. What do you guys think is happening there? He mentions need some people to be in a specific place while he is in the hotel room. Sounds like he hired the hitmen to me. Which lends credence to the idea that Danzig created Dougie. Or at least knew what was going to happen to him.

I'm saying this as someone who really likes David Lynch and liked the new episodes so far, I was worried that this season would be all Lynch with no one holding him back, because the original series was not that at all. The end product is going to be good because Lynch is talented, but I think it is going to lose a lot of the magic of the first two seasons.
