But I don't know if I would go as far as to say St Louis > Nashville as a city.

I drove through St. Louis last week and the place definitely deserves its title for most bricks ever used in a city. Couldn't get the lay of the land either, one street was run down boarded up units with beat up jalopies every few feet, then three blocks over it was yuppies out walking their dogs in trendy activity wear. Most places I've lived the seedy side of town and the rich side had a pretty clear buffer between them. Also the interchange on I-55 with I-44 almost killed me.

St Louis just happens to use the entire loving Mississippi river as said buffer. The only main rule I know is stay west of the Mississippi.

You have to go East of the river to visit Cahokia; best giant mound of dirt in the US. (seriously) My family is from Missouri and I visited some places where they grew up a few years ago. My dad grew up in Pine Lawn and my mom went to Normandy High School, both to the West. Turns out, they aren't great areas these days! Other than the system to enforce generational poverty of all the minorities, it wasn't too racist.
