Maybe because there was a movie made less than a decade before T2 which also had a big helicopter set-piece and didn't go so well?

That's exactly the reason given by the producers and several unions.

But Cameron just happened to know a completely insane pilot who said fooey to the idea of red tape and cinema history was made despite the best efforts of John Landis to ruin everything with his repeated accidents.

Ya Edward Furlong is terrible. Dont forget they ruined the big reveal in the trailers for the movie.

T1 is better but only by a little bit.

The Terminator is better than T2. Alien is better than Aliens. But then again I'm biased towards stand-alone originals and against sequels, prequels, remakes, reboots, etc.

Aliens gets points for not being a typical "First Movie All Over Again"-style sequel and actually being a different sort of movie. But even so, nope, its just not as good. Alien is just better. Its about the unknown and outer space and the abyss and all that Lovecraftian stuff. Aliens is a cool sci-fi action movie but c'mon, it reduces the alien to just a eusocial space bug.

T2 pretty much IS a typical "First Movie All Over AGain"-style sequel, but its pretty well-made and memorable for what it is and has earned a place in pop culture history. But again, nah, it aint as good. The early 90s cgi T-1000 hasnt aged much better than the mid-80s stop-motion Terminator from the first movie, so dont try to bring up special effects superiority.

To be fair, that's the only scene where the helicopter is free flying during the chase. The rest of the scenes where it is pursuing the truck had the chopper rigged up to a crane that helped it do all the crazy dodging and juking around the highway.
Doesn't stop the whole sequence from being amazing. That kind of stunt filmmaking is all but gone nowadays, Fury Road notwithstanding. Even middle road action fests in the 90s had some really good stunt work. Speed is super dumb but all the bus scenes are fantastic.

Now seems like a good time to mention the stunt men in Mad Max, several of whom nearly died, insisted on doing that poo poo for real and all they were paid for doing it was a case of beer.

Also, the truck jumping the in-flight airplane in Licence to Kill is real and resulted in unprecedented chewing out by lawyers, the airplane fight in Moonraker is real, the opening of Mission Impossible 5 with Tom Cruise on the side of a plane is real, the world record longest jump for a car in the Tom Jane The Punisher is real, the world record rollover crash in Casino Royale is real (and was an accident. he was supposed to roll 5 times, not 30+), and the jetpack scene in Thunderball is real.

e:

In fact: the amazing thing about the Bond movies that youngins might not know is that everything that isn't an obvious rear projection shot was always 100% real up until Goldeneye.

Crazy rear end stuntmen really did all that poo poo and it's an art form that is sadly missed by us olds.

I was just joking about Terminator and Alien being objectively superior.

My point is just that a person can recognize that T2 is a better made movie, technically, while personally preferring the vibe of the the first one (and atmosphere is the number one most important thing in a movie to me). It's like saying metal is objectively superior to punk because they play their instruments better. It's kinda missing the point.

I intentionally only said that about T1/T2 and not Alien/Aliens because I haven't seen Aliens all the way through in a long time (just catching bits and pieces on cable once in a while). I'm a lot more familiar with Alien. I'd have to watch both back to back to really make that call. Especially now that I know a lot more about film-making. I've seen T2 a thousand loving times though.
