And the occasional comic book ad that makes people go, "Oh hey that's a thing." I still remember opening up Archie Comics and seeing ads for neopets, back when I was an avid comic reader. Haven't actually touched Neopets myself, is it ten pounds of crap in a five pound bag?

There was something there where playing flash games got you money and that money could let you buy THINGS and some of those things could go into a neohouse thing while others could be used to equip your pet for battle. Also level up your pet and teach them skills/magics for some reason. Then there was the 'chievos, the stock market, and banking. oh and having your own shop to sell THINGS you don't want or if you don't want to get involved with. Then there were quests that MADE you buy stupid THINGS that supported this economy thing. Oh and also there were npc shops but there was a refresh timer or something and people would bot those times and markup appropriately. There were ideas and some implementation that it felt more like 10 pounds of crap in an 11 pound bag. There was some poo poo there and some of it was good but when I left there was some unfulfilled.

The only things worth buying were the paintbrushes (they let you change your pet's color and some had cool designs or changed your pet into a plush or prehistoric etc) which meant they were, of course, stupid expensive. I mean grind for several months to maybe be able to afford one stupid expensive.

This brought back so many memories! Like a lot of other girls my age at the time, I was obsessed with Neopets. I did the grinding for Neopoints by playing flash games, I did the shops, I frequented the forums, I participated in community events, I did it all. I can still remember a community event to promote a storyline that was happening at the time where there was some sort of ice undead army or something? And you had to go into the battle arena and fight NPC undead / demons to earn "points" for your side? And the status effects the enemies inflicted you with in the battle would carry over into the main site and you weren't allowed to fight while your pet was sick and the cure for the sickness was sold by a single vendor that only stocked, like, 20 at a time, so you had to bot to get a cure or pay thousands of points to buy one from the players who used a bot.

I also remember saving up 100,000 neopoints to finally buy a Halloween paintbrush for my Lupe to turn it into a werewolf, only to learn that 100,000 was just the maximum the stores would let people display and people would actually charge much higher for such a coveted paintbrush.

Getting forums avatars was like the achievements of the game. You'd get avatars for doing all kinds of crazy things on the site. Considering how early the site was made in internet terms, it had some impressive coding going on. Especially because the whole thing was originally created by bored college students, wasn't it?

avatars! those were the chievos! Also right! Community battle story things! You see I didn't get into the community battles because I didn't want to spend money on weapons since I didn't know the stats for poo poo. Instead I played some of the good flash games and some of the card games. Made some cash, played the stock market and then didn't know what to do since I didn't do fighting why both leveling?

I do remember trying to fight sloth, a phaeroh deamon, and maybe a vampire demon?

Anyone remember Graal? It was basically a crappy Legend of Zelda online game way back in the day. It was janky as hell but you could disguise your sword as the strongest weapon in the game right from the start and people had contests to see who could build the biggest bed in the game (it had user made content and housing which I guess put it ahead of its time.)

I remember Graal. Barely.

I actually looked it up when I saw this and apparently it's turned into just a flash game or something. No client, and apparently no actual account needed?

Neopets sounds like a nightmare deliberately designed to torture people while still making them feel oddly compelled to keep playing.

Back during the Neopets era I was mostly playing Asheron's Call, which was quite good for its day. It was horribly unbalanced in favor of very specific builds, but it had a good world and good lore and cool events.

Yeah, War rock is.... pretty cancerous as far as FPS mmos go. The vehicles in larger maps were fun, though. I'd spend entire games simply screwing around with the dirt bikes because younger me found them amusing. War rock was never anything but a pay to win game, honestly. The "free" guns were poo poo, and the only useful weapons you could buy through the shop cost real cash, not the in-game cash, which was also horrendously hard to come by in comparison to the cost of the weapons themselves.

at least Combat Arms has useful weapons and more interesting maps.

I think War Rock is best summed up as you did in the beginning of the video- "bad battlefield". It does have basically everything battlefield does; it has long and close range combat, it has pretty amusing vehicles, and it has a group of different classes.

But it sucks.

It's controls are pretty frustrating when it comes to handling, the player base is... whatever that was, and in the end, it just tries too hard.

It's zombie mode isn't even remotely entertaining.

At least Combat Arms I remember being rather fun for an FPS. Though my mind still boggles at why they added nut shots of all things.

We lost a really good lets play of Vindictus due to technological incompetence. We're sorry for any delays- we were very proud of the video and once we found out everything was gone we kinda lost all motivation to do it again. We'll record soon, suppose we just need to get drunk and wallow in sorrow before going back to it again.

Meanwhile just re-watch our other videos, they're all pretty much the same (except for the Viniditcus one we just recorded, proper magnum opus gone to waste)

Don't worry, we've already shot a new one and, uh, well, it's certainly something! We may even make a second video of it just because I love it so much, but trying to convince Darcy of that is the true challenge.

So, I did some looking up and according to Google, "Heroes of the Annihilated Empires" is a real time strategy game released in 2006 developed by GSC Game World, the same developers who made the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. games. As for why my recording software detected Combat Arms as it, that's the true mystery!

Completely understand swearing off them, they do find a way to ruin fun games, don't they? And make bad games even worse. I still keep wanting to go back to Vindictus occasionally, and recording that episode just made me want to play it for real even more, especially with them eliminating the need to grind between main story missions and having quests give you sets of gear so you don't have to spend millions of gold just to get standard equipment anymore.

There's a few non-nexon games I get like that for too, but these days I'm better at remembering why I stopped in the first place. Take Wakfu, for example. To borrow another goons words, Ankama clearly put their heard and soul into the game and it shows; the world is beautiful and vibrant, full of fun little secrets and details. It's a shame that the actual gameplay is breathtakingly dull.
