The Casino Royale remake was boring and they had the audacity to replace baccarat with a lovely flavor of the month version of poker.

When did you first lose your faith in the magic of movies and began to realize that they were just soulless constructs that only existed to make money? For me it was the 5 year period from 1997 to 2003: Alien: Resurrection, Jurassic Park 2, The Phantom Menace, Men in Black 2, Matrix Reloaded, Terminator 3.

Make a kids James Bond. Not even Spy Kids or Cody Banks, just like a complete story ripoff of Casino Royale except it's Uno they're playing or possibly go fish. The kids DO have real guns. However all romance story and scenes are dropped because that would be creepy.

George Lazenby was 29 when they film his Bond movie. He's got some road miles on him at 29. If you said this dude was 50, you wouldn't get many arguments about that.

Somehow I've never seen the Matrix and I keep thinking I probably should because it's referenced so much in pop culture that it just seems like something a person who likes movies should know about, ya know? On the other hand, I know most of what happens in it through cultural osmosis at this point and it looks pretty dated. So, RLMtards, help me out: does it hold up? Is it worth watching The Matrix in 2017? Is it Philosophy For Babies set to techno like I think?

I probably could've put together the whole movie just from references over the years. I recommend doing it.

The first one had a bit of self-awareness that makes it better than all its sequels.

I thinks it's more visually interesting in a way that the sequels completely abandoned. The first tried hard to sell it's tech-noir vibe with lots of shadows and strange lighting. It''s pretty to look at if nothing else.

The Matrix is similar to Aliens in that a lot of them seem like not a big deal now for first time viewers because they've been so influential and copied in action films which came after. Bullet time is generally groan worthy now but in 1999 it was loving amazing.

The Matrix remains better than most current action movies because it's structurally rock solid even if you don't care about the visuals, themes and black leather. The main character, even though people often complain about him, is a very effective vector for the audience to experience the bizarre twists of the world, the first 45 minutes until the big reveal is a fantastic surrealist mystery plot that lays out all of the important details of the universe and fleshes out the main characters. After that it transitions smoothly into the action territory we all know and love as the movie changes gears, establishing some of the most powerful, effective antagonist forces of modern cinema and putting the main characters in convincing and hopeless seeming danger that makes the payoff of the final act feel really, really well earned. By the end you have a very dramatic arc pulled off for the protagonist with seemingly wide ranging ramifications on the world the movie established that emphasizes just how much of a journey the audience and characters have experienced since the start of the movie. I don't care if I sound fruity, just watch it. khwarezm fucked around with this message at 04:58 on May 26, 2017 |

Like most movies that introduced something which became heavily referenced and imitated in other movies the original usually used it sparingly and for effect rather than just because of a generally accepted fact that it's really cool. I've just pulled an all-nighter completing an exam project, and I'm thinking I might just put the Matrix on and fall asleep to that. It's a good movie.

The Matrix is basically three things. > A really dumb college guy that barely eeked out a C- in philosophy that is now unbearably pretentious about how only he can TRULY SEE the deeper complexities of life, maaaaaaan. > A really dumb white guy that saw an anime once and bought a $50 plastic and molded steel sword at a flea market and thinks he can deflect bullets with it > A deeply sexually repressed dumb guy that thinks wearing borderline fetish gear is subversive but makes him look like a tool Imagine those three nerds wrote a script for the totally smartest anime kung fu leather fetish badass super wicked awesome movie that's not dumb, gently caress you, mom, I'm not going to church, EVER. And for some inexplicable reason someone gave them $100,000,000. That's the Matrix 1. And holy mother of god, the sequels are a trillion times worse than that. In summary: watch them. They are a towering monument to how dumb and gay the late 90's were.
