How a state swings in a presidential election does not necessarily mean that's what its state politics are like. One of Montana's currently serving senators and its governor are Democratic.

Yeah sorry if a candidate I supported committed an unprovoked assault on a reporter then lied about it in a public statement the day before the election I would not vote for them. I realize most votes were previous to this but unless Quist won 90%+ of votes cast on election day, my point stands. The people who went to the polls and cast their vote for a literal criminal today can't be "won over" via platform changes.

"Hey it was only a small margin of a loss so it's a win right?" "Hey Senators you lost your bid for the Stanley Cup by only one goal and you were expected to lose by more than one goal so it's still a W, right?" I for one am glad we have set the norm that violent people who think retirement shouldn't exist because Noah built the Ark at age 600 are encouraged to make decisions on behalf of the American people. I find it so funny that you people just don't learn. You seem to think like the world is just or righteous that you deserve some kind of justice. Justice is made by the system we live in. Outside of that system there is none. You sat around and let let republicans say on the internet and on television time and time again that Democrats are absolute evil, that it's ok to do anything no matter what it takes to stop them. You didn't have any real response or pushback. You couldn't come up with a strategy. In the days of Ancient Rome you would of been a Roman citizen in a village getting burned down by the Goths trying to run to the local roman legion "Help us help us" but they're all loving dead. You need to understand the winners make the rules in this world. And if you aren't the winners you're the losers. You need to understand the only thing that stopped hitler was the people who developed actual competent strategies to stop him. You need to realize it won't be the system, or the people in this country who are voting who will stop Donald Trump. It's up to you and your strategies. If your strategies aren't working than nothing is going to happen to stop this. Republicans can and will kill democrats like they did in Arizona. They will punch the press like they did in Montana and your response will continue to be crying on internet forums rubbing your hands without any kind of actual legitimate plan to stop them except saying "oh they are evil eventually people will vote for us." It's so loving weak and pathetic it makes me want to puke. If you are going to come up with a strategy to stop them it better be a god-damned good one. It can't be some lovely "oh lets hold press conferences on capital hill calling them names." bullshit. You have to be willing to die for your cause. And so far I'm not seeing much dying out there on the streets. There are no martyrs in America no Phan Thi Kim Phuc running from Napalm. You haven't given the American people an image or story shocking enough or strong enough to change their minds. And you won't win a war like this without some kind of sacrifice of the greatest kind. We're all desensitized by violence. Some people are simply horrified to numbness. Others feel that violence is necessary because the receiving end must have done something to deserve it anyways. At least until those with that viewpoint are themselves the victims. Still, Gianforte shouldn't have needed an assault charge to wake people up. It's insane that it's 2017 and someone who openly questions the necessity of retirement benefits because the Bible says so should have been laughed out before a single ballot was cast. People are so concentrated on picking liars, thieves, and idiots to govern because they're more concerned about sticking it to the other side than do what's best for themselves.

How would all of you feel about the Dems running more socially conservative candidates in red states? That's a strategy that I've heard suggested a few times but I just can't see it working. What would be the line to draw? Pro-choice, pro-guns, anti-LGBT, anti-immigration? if they tried this wouldn't Republicans just run even more extreme social conservative candidates who would win anyway?

Ra Ra Rasputin posted:A lot of people saying it's a good sign it was a close race and shows good signs for other races, but it was a race against a guy who violently assaulted a reporter the day before election day, do you really think future races are going to be handed such a freebie the day before the election? 2/3rds of votes were early votes cast before the assault. 9% of the 1/3 of voters that actually voted today surveyed said they voted for Quist because of the assault. That's in line with historic voter swing responses to late-stage scandals (~10%). And apparently tons of people unsuccessfully tried to change their early votes. The timing of everything sucked, but the assault seems to have had the effect that it likely should have. Let this election motivate you but don't let it drive you to despair.
