Hieronymous Alloy posted:Yeah, that's actually something I've been wondering -- exactly how long do we / does he have before the disease can no longer be hidden? I don't know the details of how the disease progresses but it should be possible to game out a timeline. Like others have mentioned, it's different for every person. the stages are fairly consistent though, and the patient is generally able to hide the early stages. Family members don't want to admit it, in my experience. They just think "gosh he laughs so much more now" instead of realizing he actually doesn't understand things and is covering up for that fact. we do this all the time even at full faculties. Now, this is pretty unique, since no person with that illness has ever had the combination of a.) under such constant exposure b.) had whatever underlying psychological conditions he may or may not have and c.) had the ability to talk to the world stream of thought with twitter. As it progresses, the sort of extremes of his personality will become more prevalent. A nice person will get REALLY nice, an emotional person will get more emotional, a mean person will get cruel. This is fairly self explanatory. His ability to moderate his emotions will start to decrease. Looking back, this is always when family members will say they started to suspect something. Then comes what's called a Definitive Incident, or when family members can't lie to themselves or ignore it anymore. This is the getting lost in a grocery store, or wandering into the street, or whatever. Family members will then learn the patient has been like hoarding tinfoil or something. A cognitive test is performed and its generally very simple, because at this point the patient will be resistant still, because they are still able to understand the implications. A doctor may simply ask what floor they're on, or ask who the president is. I worked with a guy once who, during the election, asked why the President's wife was on television. NC State engineer, still very sharp and with it, but the memory was gone. Once they're placed in full time care, whatever their progression was prior, it will accelerate. full time care specialists are absolutely the kindest people in the world. enough cannot be said about the work these people do. however, there's something about them being in a home that makes it worse. Of course, it might just be that they're under full observation at this point. One of the interesting things that will start to occur is called Sun downing. Essentially once the sun goes down, they will become aggressive. Doctors have no idea why this happens. Then from there it's just a matter of time. They'll start losing all short term memory, their skills will degenerate to the point they're no longer able to perform their activities of daily living, they'll be stuck in memories from their past and constantly relive them. They will die from it, if nothing else gets them first. It is absolutely a horrible illness, and if I were ever diagnosed I would do everything I could to make sure I died before I lost the ability to do it, just so my family wouldn't have to take care of me. I don't know if he has it. I'm not even close to qualified to diagnose it. But if he does have it, no person has ever had the level of stress and coverage he has. There is no way to predict how it would advance, or what the repercussions would be. Shifty Pony posted:His district now carves out Asheville proper and only takes the suburbs. There's talk he might try and run for governor again in 2020, but he was seen as the major force behind Quist getting the nomination for this seat so that could have burnt some bridges. Also lol at anyone who doesn't think statewide elections are winnable for Democrats in Montana. We're gonna have 16 consecutive years of popular democratic governors and had two democratic senators as recently as 2014. We had a rough cycle in 2016, but before then they also controlled most of the state executive offices like superintendent of education, secretary of state, etc. This race was absolutely winnable but the democrats put up a flawed candidate and then the party didn't invest poo poo. If the party ever intends to retake any meaningful amount of power, the route is gonna run through places much less hospitable than MT.

Just watched the Netflix doc on Roger Stone. I had somehow completely forgotten Trump being a stalking horse to Pat Buchanan in 2000. Even though he's still accusing Buchanan of being a Hitler lover in the clip, but drat it's clear that Trumps speaking and orderly thought processes were in a completely different world back then. If we're going to run around breathlessly and say the sky is falling because of a single special election, we could say that the Republicans are up 3 points compared to 2016 by looking at CA-34. Nevermind that the sole republican candidate got 3% of the vote, but that's actually up from the zero votes republicans got there in 2016 because they didn't even bother running a candidate.
