I want to know Richard's views on text editors that convert tab keypresses to spaces. It seemed like he was bothered by the tap tap tap of spacebar so perhaps that is ok.

Tab widths vary from editor to editor but if you always indent by 3 or 4 spaces then it will stay consistent!

I feel a more important thing is shunning people who save code and check it in with windows line endings. gently caress those people.

He specifically argued that spaces bloat file sizes, and as a compression specialist, that really bothered him.

Press tab to insert four spaces, but more importantly use an IDE where it auto-indents and you should hardly ever have to do so manually

I must have missed that, but really compressing runs of 3/4 spaces won't make a difference over tabs I would think, but then I am not a compression specialist.

The worst is when you're working in some language where whitespace is actually part the code, like Python, and they get mixed, and then you load it into an editor with a different tabs to spaces conversion and you're just hosed.

Edit: I'm very torn on Richard's views, because I do orefer tabs over spaces, but I also use vim over emacs.

Can we be best friends?

A space is an ASCII character, a "tab" needs additional framework to interpret.

Spaces definitely have their purpose if you're "pretty formatting" code and lining up stuff across lines.

Now, the value of that is it's own debate, but you can't do it with tabs.

I use python and the standard is to use spaces, so I set up my editor to do that and I haven't thought about it since.

I don't write a lot of python...

If I was using just 1 ide, I would configure it to make 4 spaces when I hit the tab button, but I use all manner of different text editors, so tab being tabs is what I'm used to.

Iirc, the OP closed the thread in protest of nerd chat in the nerd show thread.

Edit: I just checked. OP's a loving idiot who closed the thread over a sweet tabs vs spaces discussion and a mod unlocked the thread next day and told him to not do that again

The discussion did not resume :smith:

Weissman scores are funnier than that:

Wikipedia posted:

The Weissman score is an efficiency metric for lossless compression applications, which was developed for fictional use. It compares both required time and compression ratio of measured applications, with those of a de facto standard according to the data type. It was developed by Tsachy Weissman, a professor at Stanford, and Vinith Misra, a graduate student, at the request of producers for HBO's television series Silicon Valley, about a fictional tech start-up. [1][2][3][4]

...

Weissman score was used in Dropbox Tech Blog to explain real-world work on lossless compression. [1]

So yeah, they were made up for the show, but are technically real.
