The other part of it is that Republicans developed a reflexive 'Obama bad' regardless of the actual policy. So to the extent that Obama pushed back at the Russians, Republicans blindly criticized the response and found themselves basically making the same arguments as Russia. From there actual cooperation is a shorter putt.
