going to agree with something someone else said a bit earlier here: my only thing I think the game did badly (as opposed to just not doing something as well as it could have, like the antagonists) is the last 1/4 of the game where you're just retreading the same territory. maybe instead of the arrival in the shuttle later on they could've had a large military ship arrive you needed to explore, like the rickenbacker providing a natural late-game playground. they could've given it a different aesthetic, since it would be designed less for science and crew amenity - hostile, cramped.
Yeah, I felt like the back chunk of the game is 80% loading screens which is a real shame, because everything before it was

Most people don't finish games they buy/rent. Developers know this too which is why most games run out of steam at the end and resort to backtracking, reusing assets, or rushing the ending, it saves time and is cheaper.

Probably because it has the least impact on sales. Most people don't finish games, after all. Best, with limited time and energy, to focus on what the majority of people will play and base their impressions on. And it's twice as likely to come up in immersive sims since a lot of the fun in those is figuring out what you can do, and by the end, you tend to have done most of it. Either the game tries to challenge you when you're a demigod, and it's a pain in the rear end for the less prepared, or it doesn't, and it's a slog where you're not challenged, but you still have to do the same poo poo.

true, I do remember plenty of games that have bad end games probably because of the budget. I do think that the end game to dishonored 1 was pretty good. They had unique levels up to the end. But Prey just makes you go through the levels again, although with extra stuff happening

I would have been happy if they just put every one of the final pieces in the Bridge/Arboretum area.

So.... many.... load screens.

I was ok with having to leave the arboretum to go to the reactor/psychotronics because that made sense. But then you have to walk all the way back? I guess for the self destruct it's sort of logical but why on Earth do I have to go to the bridge to activate the nullwave? Just put an "on" button on the drat thing.

I guess i did end up recycling like 80% of the weapon upgrades i found, so that probably helped

Just finished the game today and thought it was a great ride, System Shock 2.5 is a pretty appropriate name for this game.

Lots of posters mentioned about how the designer thought of everything and wanted to add my own personal experience of this. It was near the end of the game in Alex's office when the military operators attacked, I panicked and started tossing recyclers around. After the fight I got a call from Alex chiding me about destroying an expensive statue (and I don't even remember any expensive looking statues at all).

There's what was already mentioned by others but another problem with the endgames of these types of games is that by the end you just are too powerful and have too many options. Many people, especially first time players, find liberty island to be lacking because you lack many of the tools to effectively fight or navigate the world. But by the mid point of these games you've gained a better understanding of how the game works and unlocked more ways to fight or gain access to new areas, but crucially you don't have the ability to do everything. It's a bit of a paradox that many games rely on forcing the players to make decisions on how to play to make the game fun yet if given the chance most players would gladly give themselves every ability destroying the fun that is created by forcing you to think out of the box. After all who is going to try and shoot a dart through a small window to open a door, or try and tail a med bot if you can just hack everything open. When you add that to the quite poor enemy design and the back tracking it's not surprising that the end game feels lacking

I'm on my third play-through, and something I really like about the game is how - as far as I can tell - the Q-Beam is the only gun you can't get before picking up the pistol, despite the game being structured to introduce the pistol as your first real weapon other than the wrench.

The main quest should take you everywhere at least once, so you can roughly judge your progress by how many areas you've cleared out. Entering Deep Storage would usually be a bit less than halfway through.

Of course you can feel free to go to the areas in pretty much whatever order you like; very little is blocked off after Psychotronics.

It is very good when fully upgraded, but against tougher typhons on higher difficulties, it works best when used in conjunction with psychoshock or a nullwave grenade - use the latter to disable their attacking abilities (and their shield if it's a weaver), then the beam to finish them. The big thing that makes it better than the shotgun (especially in low gravity areas) is its range - the shotgun's only really effective at point blank, whereas the beam has a longer range than any other weapon in the game AFAIK.

It's godlike when you upgrade it but it's not quite as godlike as melee range Shotgun (and also Nightmare is extra weak to Psi abilities) but Q-Beam's advantage is massive range and AoE splash damage.

Q-beam doesn't suffer from damage fall-off, so it's good for plinking from afar. Once it gets close, just switch to any other gun and shave off the remaining health.
