Grimey Drawer
Horrors of Spider Island and Pod People have special places in my heart for me (the former being the only episode I saw on TV and the latter being the first episode I saw on tape), but I think the episode I like the most is Escape 2000. The riffing is on-point and it's just such a weird hybrid of Escape from New York and The Warriors that ends up being really bleak but perfect for savaging. I'm also partial to the two Fugitive Alien "films".

Pod People is an eternal favorite. The best host segments, plus a laid back riffing vibe. "Huzzah!"

Rocket Attack USA is also one I've seen a lot.

We'd always try to catch the new ones on sci-fi, but had Prince of Space, Neptune Men, and Screaming Skull all recorded on VHS tapes and watched those religiously.

IIRC they said that they ended up cutting a lot of nudity from that one so it was basically a 60's version of Cinemax softcore porn.

That movie is also worth noting because the actress that plays the "linebacker" Babs dated Freddie Mercury for awhile.

Metroid sighting huh? Well, I did just pour this coffee...it will still be there tomorrow.
I was thinking about rankings for the new season a couple weeks ago.

1. Cry Wilderness
2. Star Crash
3. Wizards of the Lost Kingdom
4. Carnival Magic
5. Avalanche
5. Wizards of the Lost Kingdom II
6. At The Earth's Core
7. Land that Time Forgot
8. The Christmas that Almost Wasn't
9. The Time Travelers
10. The Loves of Hercules
11. Beast of Hollow Mountain
12. Yongary
13. Reptilicus

Giant rubber monster suit movies have never worked for me. But I still consider the entire 11th season to be in the upper third of all time.

The guy from Paste who ranked every MST3K episode made a new list ranking the 14 new episodes. Can't say I agree with half of it, though it's interesting how it's bookended by the two Wizards of the Lost Kingdom movies.

As far as I'm concerned, that guy got 1, 2 and 14 right.

It's always hard for me to rank MST3K episodes because they fall into two categories for me: "going to watch again" and "eh." The ones this season in the former category are Wizards of the Lost Kingdom (1), Cry Wilderness, Starcrash, The Time Travelers, Reptilicus and Yongary.

Secret Agent Superdragon, Wild Wild World of Batwoman, and The Beginning of the End(Hello, I'm Peter Graves) are my absolutely favorites.

The Giant Gila Monster will always have a place in my heart since it's the one that hooked my dad. I used to have a friend that would tape them since I didn't have cable. I'd take them over to my parents and watch them with my dad on Sunday afternoons.

Other episodes I've rewatched a lot; Manos (because I can just remember a lot of the riffing by heart), The Phantom Planet, The Undead, The Mole People (which should be boring, but I guess it's really good background noise for me), Devil Doll ("You UGLY little dummy!"), and Clonus (why is your crotch on fire?)

I just watched Overdrawn at the Memory Bank last week and I had to rewatch it the next day. It's fascinatingly bad, between the direct-to-video quality and the onslaught of bizarre plot turns, the glazed ham acting and Raul Julia holding it all together... it's like a fever dream on film. And the riffs and public television skits are so on point.

"Sam, my papers are at a slight angle."

Unless they crop them down nu-MST3K most likely won't do any of those terrible TV pilot movies and that's too bad because they were often so perfect.

I've probably watched Eegah and Hobgoblins the most. I probably wore the VHS out on both from rewatching in my youth.

Yeah, my one gripe about the wide format is that they probably won't be picking any movies that are in 4:3 or haven't had a restoration, which is definitely limiting.

There's no reason why they can't just add walls on the side if they wanted to do a 4x3 movie. I had expected them to do that for the few scope films they did this season, but they opted to crop instead for Yongary, The Beast of Hollow Mountain, and The Loves of Hercules.

There's more HD masters than you'd think out there. Also, it's cheap to do a simple transfer off a print if they wanted a film badly enough, especially if it's something Shout! Factory can release on its own.

I feel fairly confident in guessing they're not going to put black bars on the side for 4:3. It's far more likely that they'd crop the movie down (as, you point out, they already have).

I just watched Beast of Hollow Mountain, and I'm amazed at the audacity of it. If you started watching after the title sequence and stopped maybe twenty minutes before the end, you'd have no idea it was a monster movie at all.

I watch a lot of westerns (a local station likes to show em at a time when I like background noise) and it would be a perfectly functional one too, albeit not great. It's that ens sequence that catapults it into MST territory.
