with the limited hardware and knowledge at the time its probably all kludgey stuff to present things to the player as efficiently as possible, ocarina of time was another game built on the 'same engine' as mario 64 and speedrunners have discovered countless sloppy-n-fast design choices that would never be found by someone just playing the game normally. its really cool poo poo to read about and watch, modern engines like UE4 are thousands of times more complicated and watching videos on how exactly you program dynamic lighting for smoke and particle effects is totally crazy as well

Didn't Crash Bandicoot have some insane poo poo going on? I seem to remember reading an article about that

Mario 64 was also delayed like a year (and the N64 along with it) so imagine how much more hosed up the game might have been if it had to come out on its original target date

Yeah they also used a different less documented rendering resolution mode and the game is full of folliage to super aggressively cull (aka not draw) the polygons behind them. I love the inventive boundary pushing poo poo they used to do in games which can be exploited like pretty much everything in pokemon. On phone but if you search for thezzazzglitch theres a guy who is pretty much the pannenkoek of pokemon

trying to jack off posted:crash bandicoot has winding levels to limit your view distance and coloured polygons instead of textures so they could get the most detail possible on screen at all times they also pre-computed the order polygons needed to be drawn rather than wasting precious cpu time during gameplay (since the camera was on rails they could get away with just storing every possibility)

Here's one of the devs writing about cramming everything into the PSX's RAM and dynamic loading in levels. https://www.quora.com/How-did-game-developers-pack-entire-games-into-so-little-memory-twenty-five-years-ago/answer/Dave-Baggett
