I dunno, Moraes seems pretty great but it's been three and a half years since he fought someone with a wikipedia page. Assunção is pretty good, so if Moraes can get past him I will absolutely say Moraes belongs playing with the big boys*. *metaphorically big

It's probably not the most entertaining fight ever and it's on the piss yellow UFC 200 mat so it's an eye sore too, but if you want to see how good he is, that's a good bet because you know how good Frankie Edgar is, right?

You need to go and check out aldo / mendes II and both frank edgar fights. it's hard to verbalise what's so special about him when he's got that conor loss, but wrestling just simply does not work against him. the only thing that's worked against him is a massive lightweight with an obscene reach advantage and power that can accurately be described as unfair got to him, and i'd consider that result an outlier if they fought ten times.

As cool and funny as the 13 second KO was, it sucks because a 5 round fight between Conor and Aldo would definitely be one of the best fights of all time and it answered like two questions. 1. Can Conor knock Aldo out? Yes 2. Was Aldo the saltiest human being on the planet when that fight started? Yes Everything else about MMA is up in the air about that match up so it's just poo poo we're not seeing a re-run.

Aldo/Mendes 2 is a fight everyone should watch at least once, but you really miss out on something if you don't watch Aldo/Mendes 1 and all of Mendes intervening fights.

Watching Aldo/Edgar now. Loved Aldo's post-fight interview in the Mendes fight. "So did you deliberately punch him after the buzzer?" "I knew I had to punch him, so when I saw the chance I punched him."

the thing about conor is if he goes out now there's going to be a million questions and a million asterisks on the motherfucker. i know in my heart of hearts if he carry on in this game he'll have more embarrassing losses than nathan diaz on his ticket. if he loses to floyd and punches out though, he'll be a flat out legend and arguably the greatest to have ever done it, which, as not a particularly strong fan of his, i want him to do. he's something else.

It's a punch followed by two punches. The first is before the buzzer, the next two, the ones that really gently caress Mendes up, are during it. The more important factor is that Goddard doesn't really get between them and end the round before Aldo knocks Mendes down. He kind of shoves his hands out and down between their waists, then intervenes fully as Mendes is falling back. Also that fight has like three eyepokes and two nut-shots, it's really good. I didn't go back to look, but it struck me as one right on the buzzer and then the follow-up half a second later. Still probably him just throwing a combo that happened to hit the second shot after the buzzer, but I just laughed at his reaction when asked being,"Well I saw the chance to hit him so I took it! vv" Aldo/Edgar I, it's crazy to watch slow-mo of Aldo taking a hard upper-cut to the face but still connecting with his shot even as his head is snapping backwards.

It's cool when Mendes fakes a punch, into a faked shot, then throws an uppercut from the floor straight to Aldo's chin and before Aldo's even got his front foot back down from being thrown backwards by the punch, he's throwing out a jab to back Mendes off. Aldo/Edgar 1 also has a cool Frankie moment when Aldo headkicks him and Frankie just keeps fighting.

Marching Powder posted:hey jerusalem how'd you score aldo / edgar 1? It was real good but I think Aldo came out ahead, he took his shots but he always seemed to have the upper hand as far as I could tell.. Watching the rematch now and I'm actually pretty sure I watched this show before since I remember the controversy over Silva coming in as a late replacement and Cormier getting booed for not going hard out against him, but I don't actually remember this fight. Maybe it was overshadowed in my mind by Jon Jones loving up his life all over again.

Kinda funny that in the Mendes match they mentioned that Aldo had a tendency to get gassed when he went to the 5th round, because it's pretty clear that is no longer a problem for him in that match or the two Edgar fights.

Did we vote UFC 200 as the worst event? It wasn't, but drat was it forgettable. I think the only thing I really remember is Cain spin kicking Browne and that one body kick Silva hit on DC.

just like the underdog look like he's winning when he's simply being competitive, ufc 200 poo poo the bed despite it having miller killing gomi, lauzon burying diego, sage not tapping to an armbar and winning, tj schooling assuncao, kelvin schooling johny, cain spin kicking brown and collapsing that stupid idiot, and frankie / aldo II.

Conor definitely hits extremely hard but the Aldo KO was also perfect timing and hit the right place at the right time. He probably couldn't intentionally throw a better punch.
