I just watched The Straight Story for the first time. Remember when I watched Blue Velvet and said it wasn't as Lynchian as Lynch's other stuff? I'd like to take all that back if I could (I could absolutely see some genuine Lynch moments in The Straight Story, but mostly it just made me appreciate the Lynchian qualities of Blue Velvet even more.)

I got a longtime friend to watch the pilot tonight. He knew the reputation of the show from the 90s, that's it was A Big Deal, and only knew it was "about a missing person and some weird stuff." He liked it.

I really liked the shot of that endless ocean beneath the void that lies beneath the Black Lodge. It reminded me of the many times I've noclipped through a video game map and witnessed a similar endless ocean beneath the geometry of the world. Dale Cooper's strange journey implies the existence of many, many more dimensions and planes of existence than just the Waiting Room and Lodges, which is wonderful. These realms are incomprehensible to an outsider, both horrifying and enchanting at the same time. I love how glitchy the perception of time becomes when one travels to places outside our mundane reality.

Can someone remind me, is Shadow Cooper just Bob or is he a separate entity from Bob? Also, is the fat man's corpse under the covers in Ep 1 Briggs? That's what I interpreted it as.

BOB seems like he could exist in multiple aspects at once, so maybe all of the doppelgangers are some sort of BOB.

I do not think that Dale Cooper is intended to have failed in the black lodge. From the very beginning, Dale Cooper has been presented to us as a man of great courage, valor, and possessing a keen intellect. His esoteric knowledge and techniques allowed him to progress through the spider's web of threads leading to the killer of Laura Palmer. During this time, the case is revealed to us to be something much larger and turned out to be a "blue rose" case that had devoured multiple other agents over the course of decades. Dale Cooper is a bad rear end. And while BOB was able to use the opportunity Cooper presented to further his own goals (via a dopple-Dale), I do not think that the show intends for the viewer to see Dale Cooper as a character that has failed at any stage of the story. Indeed, I think the very fact that Cooper has survived 25 years in the Black Lodge and has returned to Earth shows that he is persevering.

Like Hawk said, if you confront the Black Lodge with imperfect courage, it will utterly annihilate your soul. If he failed, he wouldn't be around at all anymore.

He was prepared to face Windom Earle, but it turned out that there were worse things waiting for him inside the lodge. This is why we get scenes of the doppelgangers chuckling at their little game. It's all going according to plan. Still, Cooper got screwed over, but he didn't get utterly destroyed like his old partner.

Yeah, Cooper is definitely not perfect and even said himself in the original series that he had been weak in the past and not always shown good judgement. Remember what happened in Pittsburgh that time? He also certainly showed less than perfect courage when he met his shadow self/doppelganger/dweller on the threshold.

BOB tells Cooper to leave, after taking Earle's soul. Coop is followed by his doppelganger who chases him to the exit. He isn't running away because he's afraid, he's running away because he's leaving.
