I just watched The Straight Story for the first time.

Remember when I watched Blue Velvet and said it wasn't as Lynchian as Lynch's other stuff? I'd like to take all that back if I could :haw:

(I could absolutely see some genuine Lynch moments in The Straight Story, but mostly it just made me appreciate the Lynchian qualities of Blue Velvet even more.)

I got a longtime friend to watch the pilot tonight. He knew the reputation of the show from the 90s, that's it was A Big Deal, and only knew it was "about a missing person and some weird stuff."

He liked it. :3:

I really liked the shot of that endless ocean beneath the void that lies beneath the Black Lodge. It reminded me of the many times I've noclipped through a video game map and witnessed a similar endless ocean beneath the geometry of the world.

Dale Cooper's strange journey implies the existence of many, many more dimensions and planes of existence than just the Waiting Room and Lodges, which is wonderful. These realms are incomprehensible to an outsider, both horrifying and enchanting at the same time.

I love how glitchy the perception of time becomes when one travels to places outside our mundane reality.

I'm watching the show with my bf who's never seen it. We just finished season 1 and he enjoyed it, too. He pretty much knows only about the dead girl, but wasn't even aware about the werid stuff. Even after the first season, I don't think he quite picked up how weird the show will be. Can't blame him, because aside from "something in the woods" mentions, everything in season 1 can be explained as dreams or people being unstable. Watching season 2 is gonna be loving great.

Like that's loving embarrassing it's only a tv show, and I'm not a dumbass because I simply want to discuss what I feel is wrong about the show. And yes I *AM* surprised at the response, it's only a tv show and I've said my opinion and have been called all kinds of names, THAT'S embarrassing. Calm the gently caress down we have Trump as president and you're being a baby over an opinion of a tv show only 4 episodes in.
People are giving you poo poo because you jumped into season 3 of an unconventional show and are acting like you're the only one who knows the real deal, and the dozens of others who love it need to watch a REAL show like Legion. Several people have said that the S3 intro was some of the best Twin Peaks they've ever seen, and it's fine if you hated it, but you act like your opinion is objective fact. "Who was that person?? they never told us, this was never explained, this is boring, watch something else guys." Acting like the majority of people are wrong and you are right, especially when you've deliberately skipped the first 30+ hours of this series, is really annoying. People would be more receptive to your opinions if you had more context and perhaps observations less obtuse than "This show is just people staring at each other."

Well, there's a lot of iconography in Twin Peaks that makes for good tattoos. The zig-zag floor of the lodge, the owl symbol, the "Meanwhile" thing Laura does with her hands. Coffee and pie.

Briggs goes in wearing camping gear and comes back looking like he just loving went toe to toe with the red baron.

I loved this because it just immediately tells you he's been around waaaay beyond having a dream that he's in a red room which at that point in the show was a huge deal.

Shadow Cooper was presented as its own entity in the black lodge. there were also shadow versions of leeland, laura, and the man from another place. it hasnt been made clear whether evil cooper is shadow cooper or some hybrid of shadow cooper and bob

I do not think that Dale Cooper is intended to have failed in the black lodge.

From the very beginning, Dale Cooper has been presented to us as a man of great courage, valor, and possessing a keen intellect. His esoteric knowledge and techniques allowed him to progress through the spider's web of threads leading to the killer of Laura Palmer. During this time, the case is revealed to us to be something much larger and turned out to be a "blue rose" case that had devoured multiple other agents over the course of decades.

Dale Cooper is a bad rear end.

And while BOB was able to use the opportunity Cooper presented to further his own goals (via a dopple-Dale), I do not think that the show intends for the viewer to see Dale Cooper as a character that has failed at any stage of the story. Indeed, I think the very fact that Cooper has survived 25 years in the Black Lodge and has returned to Earth shows that he is persevering.

Agreed. Like Hawk said, if you confront the Black Lodge with imperfect courage, it will utterly annihilate your soul. If he failed, he wouldn't be around at all anymore.

Look at you doubting Hawk's authority.

I always figured Coop got set up for failure. He was prepared to face Windom Earle, but it turned out that there were worse things waiting for him inside the lodge. This is why we get scenes of the doppelgangers chuckling at their little game. It's all going according to plan. Still, Cooper got screwed over, but he didn't get utterly destroyed like his old partner.

Yeah, Cooper is definitely not perfect and even said himself in the original series that he had been weak in the past and not always shown good judgement. Remember what happened in Pittsburgh that time? He also certainly showed less than perfect courage when he met his shadow self/doppelganger/dweller on the threshold.

That's kind of misrepresenting how that sequence goes, though. BOB tells Cooper to leave, after taking Earle's soul. Coop is followed by his doppelganger who chases him to the exit.

He isn't running away because he's afraid, he's running away because he's leaving.
