I guess the cities we respectively live in have different levels of what an expensive car is, I only ever see young people driving them. This isn't me arbitrarily knocking your choice of car.

But really, the Focus RS is the same type of car and it's not exactly something a young person can get their hands on unless they're from a wealthy family. I like the EvoX styling more than the RS if anyone cares.

I'm also not planning on a purchase until after Feb when we get married. Prices on EvoX's are starting to slip a bit, there's a perfect one for $29K equipped as I would want, in the right color and still stock with stupid low mileage. I'm sure that a year from now I can find one for a good enough deal. Unless I manage to sell all this dumb crap filling up my life and someone came along to buy the MS6 for $8K. I could probably convince the fiance to let me buy the car if I had 2/3 of the cash.

Bought my daughter a generic power-wheels jeep-shaped car a couple of months ago. She's so terrified of it that I had to cover it with a tarp so she couldn't see it in the garage. I decided to strip the stickers off of it and slam a billion Frozen wall decals on it in an attempt to make her like it. She's totally into it now, but only as a static display piece. She approves of it until it moves, either under it's own power, or being pushed by me. Progress, at least.

I'm gen X and I can't afford a $40k car. I can afford 4 $8000 cars though, which I'd rather do anyway. Although I spent sunday morning drooling over a new V60 Polestar, holy poo poo. Not only was it gorgeous, it was the fastest Volvo in attendance at the import drags. If I sold all my other cars and parts I could get one and have tons of room in my garage. Actually tempting.

I'm fortunate enough that I could afford a 40k car, but I'm a cheapskate who hates depreciation and prioritizes other stuff (emergency fund, retirement, college fund for kid, vacation fund). I am thinking of spending about 30k on my next (used) car but my wife is telling me "no." She spends too much on everything she buys daily, but panics when I suggest a large one time expenditure because it has more digits than she's used to. It's very frustrating. I'm the primary earner in the household by 2x and am diligent about saving and earning; she fritters away money like it comes from trees, then digs her heels in when I want to buy something for myself. I can't wait until my kid is out of daycare, it will be a 20k/year raise. blk fucked around with this message at 18:38 on May 30, 2017 |

After school clubs, sports, music classes, clothes, food, etc etc... She's gonna cost just as much if not more as she grows. I could swing the $40k car if I wanted to, but not comfortably enough to be worth it. Rather put money into savings and dig the wife out of student loans/medical debt.
