The best of it for me is the receptionist bot's "Ummm... welllll...." afterwards, as though they'd been rehearsing this for weeks and only just now realized that, having exploded all 6 actors, this would be a one-night showing.

The play is completely Japanese in the Japanese version.

I prefer to think they had a totally different plan for the play, then the actors ended up adlibbing on opening night and BOY DID IT GO POORLY!

Apparently it's "bakachin ga!" (I had to look up a version with Japanese text) which is sort of hard to translate. -chin is really cutesy and childish and insulting depending on the context, like "sweetie-pie" or something. I get the feeling there's a pun or something there but it's not one I get.

Japan has a thriving tradition of theater since forever, and Shakespeare is foreign enough to be romantic and exotic but not foreign enough that it doesn't resonate so you don't get a Shakespeare In The Bush situation

It sounds like plain, modern Japanese to me, if literary rather than colloquial. At least at the start. It's pretty much the same as the English except for that.

- Oh, Romeo, Romeo, why are you Romeo?
- Ah, Juliet, Juliet, why are you Juliet?
- Oh, Romeo, Romeo, what the heck, which one of you is Romeo?
Ah, Juliet, Juliet, I don't really know either.
Oh, Romeo, Romeo, in that case, let's reduce your numbers!
Ah, Juliet, Juliet, in that case, I'll make sure to also steal away your life!
- Die, Romeo! You loving rear end in a top hat!
- I will make you regret the fact that you were born! Take this!
- I'll make you taste dirt, you bastard!
- Dieeeee!
- I'll destroy you!
- Ow! Owww! I'll kill you!
- Die, dieee!
- I'll crush you!
- Vanish from this world and die, you rotten woman!
- Perish, you accursed man!
- You dummyyyy! (This is the "pisseth off" line... it's a bit different in Japanese. It's "moron" with a familiar suffix.)
- Oh, Romeo is no more. I ended up killing them all. I, too, shall go with them!

StandardVC10 posted:

Which is actually the correct body count for the real play, just with slightly more murder and slightly less suicide.

I feel like the biggest inaccuracy in the machine version is that the Romeos and Juliets react way too rationally and mature in comparison to their real-world counterparts. Only one out of the six needlessly killed themselves, and they have much more meaningful and emotive dialogue between each other prior to their deaths.

I like Pod's serious business mode for this theme park stamp collecting quest.I half wondered if they'd stop fighting once they got down to one each, but then that didn't happen.

Agreeing that the announcer bot's "Ummm, well." line is my favorite. Made better by talking to the audience and finding out this is not the first show. So the question is, did they do a different show earlier and this was new, is the announcer bot new, or does the announcer bot always forget the play involves the actors blowing up?

It just occurred to me. That one stubby on the left who fell over... how would they even get back up? Their arms aren't long enough to right themselves, and their legs don't have enough articulation to get back up either.
This game missed a big chance to have a rolling, donkey Kong barrel style machine.

Also, "hack hug" becomes a lot darker once you see what 9S' hacking generally does to machines

Didn't 9S keep saying the machines aren't intelligent and don't say anything meaningful? He's sure taking this functional village of sentient robots in stride. He also seems pretty ok with talking to and helping them out. Not at all trying to call out bad writing (though the speed at which he changes his stance is pretty jarring), in fact it seems like this current generation of androids thinks a lot more flexibly on their duty and attitude towards the machines (we've seen multiple desertions even though they just deployed at the beginning of the game, including 2 who were hiding out in a machine village).

Keep hoping this game goes on sale for the summer sale.

He was mostly referring to the machines that they fight and the random recordings they repeat. And typically they are assumed to be connected to the network.
And he seems just doubtful when the machine just seems to copy human behaviors, so there weren't enough basis to just determine whether they reaaly have sentience just from what they do, especially when they sort of function more like organs when connected to the network.

For the others, which are mostly disconnected from the network, they are more of a wild card for him since they are mostly self contained AI that have wide variety of developements over thousands of years, so it would pique his curiosity on what really makes them tick.
And since they aren't part of the network, i.e. the enemy, there is no directive for him to just destroy on sight nor avoid interacting with them. So he would have no problem applying diplomacy for the sake of avoiding unneccessary combat. But he could still remain doubtful of actual sentience, since those can't just be determined from how they act from appearance (after all from our perspective the game or 'A.I' web chat programs itself doesn't have actual sentient AI despite the attempt at emulating them)

Yeah, there's a bit of a progression. He goes from "just spewing old world data" in the factory, then is surprised when Engels talked, then thinks they're just mimicking human behaviour in the desert. He's totally weirded out by the robo-orgy... the roborgy... and I think him telling 2B not to listen is just as much trying to reassure himself. Then after Simone's fight he's actually willing to consider that she had emotions (gets smacked down by 2B, who's her own story), but is totally curious about checking out the village. Then he's definitely quite suspicious, but gives Pascal and co. a chance. I agree he's kind of in denial there, and is trying really hard to keep being robo-racist... robocist... and you know, not get into an existential/programming crisis (of conscience).

But then everything ID has covered since then has been optional sidequests that can be done in just about any order, which makes it kind of hard for 9S to have coherent or consistent development*, at least for now, but I think his current mindset is basically "willing to give some machines a chance, and is slightly open to the possibility they might be self-aware".

*a 9S who didn't do either of the escort missions and only did the Jean-Paul fetch chain would probably have a much worse opinion of machines
