Jesus this has been a rollercoaster. Got quite  for a bit there but wow, what a ride.I wanna chew on this for a while. Like, why. What was Ishida's thing at the beginning, why did he want to kill himself, was it originally as implied to get one last thrill or was he suffering from depression as a result of what he did and what happened to him afterwards; what do they mean about something about regarding "the bridge" and something that happened with it? And why did Shoko want to also kill herself?; what was her thought process for thinking she was hurting Ishida? I feel like there are some character motivations I missed. e: I should go back and finish the Manga do, skimming tvtropes and it seems like it expands on the aspects I'm missing out on. He wanted to kill himself because he thought he was a worthless being who brought nothing but pain to everyone around him. The fact that his final act was to pay back his mother for all the hearing aids he forced her to pay for indicates that his thought process was "I need to clear up all my debts and then I can disappear and everyone will be happier without me." So yeah, he was suffering from depression. However, he accidentally asked Shoko to be friends with him when he went to give a final apology, which ended up giving him a reason to live, for the moment at least. The "bridge" was the moment when he insulted all his friends, one by one. Metaphorically, that was when he burnt all his bridges and abandoned the circle of friends he'd gathered. Shoko wanted to kill herself because she saw herself as responsible for tearing apart all their friendships, in the same way that Ueno did. As she said to Ueno on the ferris wheel: "I don't hate you, I hate myself." In other words, "If I hadn't been born, everyone else would've been happier." She was also depressed the entire time. She felt like her deafness was simply a burden on everyone she had to interact with. She saw the bridge scene as an indication that the problems she caused couldn't ever be fixed, although she probably couldn't tell exactly what was being said. She saw Ishida's desperation to pretend nothing was wrong as simply more pain she was causing him.
