It probably doesn't matter all that much. You can argue that a tiny majority gives her a card to play in seeking concessions because she can argue that with a small majority she can't get a poo poo deal through parliament. Or you can argue that having a tiny majority leaves her at the mercy of the ultra-brexit fruit loops, which might carry more weight if she wasn't an ultra-brexit fruit loop herself (since we're now committed to an even harder brexit than the official Vote Leave campaign were arguing for, ie leaving the single market and the customs union).

I'm not surprised to see some dissent in the Tory ranks. It's one thing to be ideologically Conservative and want them to win, but it must be exasperating when your leader is falling apart in the face of the election she herself called.

I can't help but feel that she's still going to win because the campaign time was so short. There's just not enough time for how terrible May is to sink in. So now we get to see exactly how hosed we are but can't prevent it. I knew she was bad, she's a Tory. But she's not just bad, she's inept and unstable. She'll crash this country into the abyss if she thinks it'll give her a legacy.

Yeah the 2015 7-way debate was kind of a clusterfuck. It probably limits Corbyn's risk in deciding to join, unless literally everyone dogpiles on him (they won't, and also moderators won't really let it happen to the degree people might expect), then most of the debate will probably just be white noise unless big shocker soundbites happen. In which case it just becomes an effective attack line on May.

It's worth remembering that this 7-way format was first implemented at the insistence of master political operator Davey Cameron prior to the 2015 GE (he threatened not to turn up unless it included everybody). The general consensus was that this was because the idea of a head-to-head debate with Milliband loving terrified him, because he wouldn't be able to get away with his non-answer, soundbitey deflection bollocks that works so well at PMQs.

By making it a 7 way the debate (as intended) becomes utterly unmanageable and incoherent and probably nothing and nobody can meaningfully stand out or make an impression unless somebody has a compete meltdown and monopolises all the post-event reporting. The goal was to allow David's empty rhetoric sort of merge into the general background noise, instead of being the centre of attention.

All of which makes May's probable refusal to participate even more hilarious, because this entire format was designed explicitly to protect tories who can't function in a grown up debate, and she can't even handle that.

Young Tory in "absolute scumbag" shocker: https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2017/may/31/controversial-blogposts-tory-party-candidate-absolutely-shocking

quote:

A Conservative candidate in a key marginal seat has said a woman’s “promiscuity” is relevant in determining how likely it is that she consented to sex in alleged rape cases.

Peter Cuthbertson, who is seeking election as the Tory candidate in Darlington, expressed a series of controversial views in a prominent blog he wrote in the early 2000s.

He praised a “courageous priest jailed in Sweden for preaching against homosexuality” and wrote several blogposts about rape claims, including one arguing against proposals to make men prove they obtained consent before sex and restrictions on bringing up a woman’s sexual history in court.

He argued that a “woman of low morals is more likely to consent to sex, and to lie” and concluded that “all the sympathy in the world should be extended to women who have been raped, but men who are falsely accused of this crime are equally the victims here”.

The 33-year-old, a public affairs consultant, who has previously worked for the Taxpayers’ Alliance, is in a tight race to overturn a 3,158 majority held by Labour’s Jenny Chapman in Darlington. The Conservative Commentary blogposts were written when he was a university student 18 to 20years old.

One of them opines on the problem of “diseased children of diseased morals” in a piece about sexually transmitted disease infection rates among young people.

Cuthbertson wrote: “I can say with absolute certainty that 99% of the girls in question will know exactly how to use various contraceptives. The reason they don’t on the whole seem to bother is the same as the reason they mate like animals in the first place: no one hopes for or demands anything better from them than that they conform to the most base instincts for instant gratification, whatever the morality of their actions and whatever the consequences.”

Although he did have a pretty good zinger on having changed his mind:

quote:

“I didn’t actually have an Afro at the time, but my views have certainly changed on a number of issues since I was a teenager in 2002,”
