Is that really the case, though? The story does feel like two books got squeezed into one, but it's not a parade of new merch. No Jokaero, no Psyrifle dreads, no big GK mech-walker (I think it wasn't out then but might well have been in planning and included in lore). The core of the plot is basically a 5-squad of Knights and their Inquisitor handler.

Yeah there was an article about him being forced to include like 5 pages about a new dropahip and some some other poo poo. I don't play tabletop so I don't really know but it was discussed and mentioned here

Idk I just assumed dude is plugged into tabletop I don't follow any of that poo poo.

ADB says in the literal opening of the book he was halfway done writing it and had to rewrite cause the grey knights codex dropped in the middle and than like through the grapevine it also came out he had to include stuff about new models. I specifically remember a dropship and the description of said dropship going on for like a page.

Also I don't think jokero are a thing anymo

Not only are Jokaero a thing, you can field an entire army that is just them and an Inquisitor. You'll lose, but your army of monkey-slaves will live forever in the tales of your foes. Because they've all got Lascannons/Heavy Flamers/Multi-meltas simultaneously, so they're going to blow-up a ton of stuff on their way out.

Pretty sure I remember hearing somewhere that ADB didn't even include most of the new GK stuff out of sheer spite.

Emperor's Gift is one of two Marine Bolter Porn books I've bothered read (the other one being Brotherhood of the Snake) because I find marine fiction really boring but EG still pleasantly surprised me and still a book I can generally recommend.

Emperor's Gift was kinda weird imo. The main character is a bit of a antisocial fuckup who doesn't work well with others and gets his mate killed. Although he's individually skilled and destroys Angron's sword which is a big deal, in the end he gets transferred to what is basically a desk job. The book paints a pretty bleak picture of what the Grey Knights do with the internal politicking from the captain to them erradicating the Armageddon survivors. They get continually outmatched by the Space Wolves, including Grimnar killing their Captain in front of a whole bunch of Grey Knights and then walking away from it in the end. One detail I liked a lot though was towards the end when the inquisitor asks him if Grey Knights are incorruptible because they're made to be or because they're just much better and purer than everyone else. The answer is that noone knows

Reading the Ravenor Trilogy before EG made me more invested in the story than if I had read it without that context. EG is also so much different than Ben Counter's GK trilogy, as I read it after the first book of the omnibus. The other two books in the series worked much better than the first, with the third being my favorite since it's basically Gladiator in the WH40k universe.

From last page, but they're also the villains in Pariah, along with possibly the Ecclesiarchy, the Word Bearers, the Emperor's Children, and Eisenhorn.

Actually I think the Cognitae are in all of Abnett's stuff except for the original Eisenhorn trilogy. They're the biggest, oldest, and most well-infiltrated cult in the galaxy.

It's pretty cool that Abnett tries to squeeze them in, but it's only Abnett. For being the oldest cult with the loftiest goals, they are the most untapped storytelling resource in the 40k universe. Molotch was a fairly interesting villain, and he was your run-of-the-mill Cognitae guy, right? There is unlimited potential for 40k fuckery with a bunch of Molotchs across the galaxy.

Demiurge4

He was first generation cognitae. Molotch shows open contempt for 'lesser' cognitae in the books and treats an infiltrated inquisition confessor as completely expendable.

I've been reading omnibus editions of Horus Hersey straight though, and I'd recommend against that. The quality difference between books makes it painful to read one after the other.

Reading Fulgrim then Angel Exterminatus makes AE a slog, which could stand to be about 75 pages shorter. The fact it includes the Iron Warriors and the Iron Hands with each having a dreadnought, Berossus or Bombastus doesn't do it any favors on the readability front.

As a bonus gently caress You, the omnibus editor tagged on a short story immediately after Angel Exterminatus that undoes a character's death. Pretty lame to resurrect a dead guy within 30 physical pages, but I guess Lucious has fans despite him turning into a one trick pony, now with plot armor!

Yeah, just book reading for me.

I really dislike him as a character, at this point, so the idea that he keeps coming back is a bit disheartening. He wasn't so bad when he was a foil for goody two shoes Tarvitz, but now he's simply one dimensional. He likes 1) new sensations of pain 2) proving he's the best with a sword 3) nothing else. I get it. I don't see why that has to be brought up every time he enters a scene. Even when it's dudes just standing around casually chatting about their weekend, the author brings up how Lucious thinks he could shish kabob everyone in the room.

Thanks to that Helsreach youtube thing I linked earlier, I acquired some 40k audiobooks for a recent road trip. Never listened to an audiobook before, so it was pretty interesting to see how different it was from normal reading.

Helsreach, The First Heretic and Aurelian were all great, enjoyed the hell out of them. Then I hit Know No Fear and thought "you tedious Ultramarine nerds, you deserve what's coming to you" after a few chapters. I think all the details in Abnett's writing came across fine in print, but having it all read out loud made it feel like it dragged a ton.

Except if I remember correctly GW keeps moving the goal post with the extent on how his power works and it has gone from being proud or whatever that you killed him to basically going "Okay he's dead next one" being enough to doom you which is dumb as gently caress.

One is a clever way to tie in the emotional and excess aspects of Slaneesh, the other is a lovely way to keep a character alive.
