my experience with mass effect was me going into the whole experience doe eyed after reading all of the incredible press the game recieved and all of the hype from everyone i knew about how there was so much content in the game. but the second i tried to do side quests and stuff but the small handful were really lame and didn't seem to confer much benefit like equipment or guns and its not like the writing was compelling so i just kind of floated through the game till the end. i was going to type that i didn't play the ending but i googled it and i guess i did, i just didn't remember any of it. no romance options ever came up and i have no clue how it even happens. it felt like it was completely half baked and the absolute bare minimum amount of game necessary to be a 'open world rpg with branching paths'

i see people with N7 tattos and it blows my loving mind

the best part of the game were the lander where you roamed around in a hilarious moon buggy but its a shame each of those zones had like, one or two areas to do things in tops

Making fictional characters relatable is how you end up with stuff like this.

mass effect 1 was pretty good and it felt like i was wandering around inside a decent facsimile of a david brin novel
mass effect 2 was decent but all the new characters were shite except green assassin cancer bugman maybe, and the game itself got weaker and weaker the closer you got to the end. and the end was embarrassing nonsense
mass effect 3 was incoherent tits 'n' explosions trash and every surface in that game was highly reflective for no loving reason and that pissed me the hell off

I really wonder how the second and third games woulda turned out if EA hadn't snapped bioware up. i am positive that there were a whole bunch of meetings where some shithead with a haircut that cost money was all "what the gently caress is 'space opera'? people don't care about that. they want to blow things up and crank off"

for real this really loving gets to me. outside of the first game (which definitely wasn't perfect and felt like rear end to play when it was time to shoot stuff) that series is the epitome of patronising poo poo. it's the most cynical and shallow loving thing ever and people love it and act like it's not something for 12yos

"oh yeah so they collect people and turn them into... liquid metal and... build a giant evil human alien space robot out of them. out of the people they melted down. into human metal. it has a big metal skull and glowing eyes and you shoot it in its eyes, to kill it" MmmMmMmmMMMmm thats good Science Fiction.

Maybe not that unpopular but: streaming and YouTube ruins games to various degrees. I played Archeage at its launch in the very brief window that it was tolerable (or at least know one knew it was poo poo yet) and a streamer had his guild on the opposite faction.

He had a constant horde of idiot fans that lavished him with gifts. His guild was unstoppable....
Until the next streamer bait game and it disappeared overnight, leaving our guild to absolutely stomp but subsequently become the new big bad guys.

This is still true for most games: Some of the crazy air spergs in Battlefield post videos for YouTube pennies, and any time you get stomped by a name with .tv in it you just know it's because he's playing all day as his job or side hustle. The minute someone can monetize something, it becomes a race to the bottom. We need Full Games Communism.

Every multiplayer game should have a "I have a job" league option where if you play more than 3 hours in a night other than a Friday or Saturday it kicks you out to general pop. :colbert:

This is... actually a really interesting idea? Like I'm sure you'd get a shitload of try hard players running twink characters/accounts so they can stomp on people in that category but at least it'd limit them to playing with basic equipment only or whatever. For real I'd love to see someone try this.

If you did it for something like Battlefield I can't imagine people would be dropping $50 and expack money to smurf, but I bet it would also split and destroy most game communities in real practice.

I just want to play multiplayer games without having to go against 12 hour a day insane people who are probably also simultaneously screaming about Trump, sexism, or whatever happens to enrage the chatbox in that session.

Give me only matches of disgruntled, tired, half-drunk office workers so we're all on the same level.

i agree with the first sentence and can definitely get behind the other two sentences. it never occurred to me that twitch superstars get monetary support from their fanbase to kick the poo poo out of everyone else in a video game, but it makes sense

Video Game Communism would also get rid of the "AAA games and indie games and nothing else" paradigm that we talked about a few pages ago

half life 2 was the first time I saw that a video game had succeeded in imitating reality. that sounds like some insane puffery but really if you think about it, before hl2 the closest a game had come to attempting to use directed level design, physics and npc behavior as the foundation of a realistic setting was Jurassic Park Trespasser and it sucked

but its design concepts are mostly unused in other games. most modern AAA titles have nothing in common with hl2, their goals are almost completely opposite

but modern warfare? yeah. thats what AAA games look up to

this is what matchmaking is supposed to do. I've literally never faced anyone on overwatch that I would consider oppressively good. if I get on a roll and tryhard with genji it will dump me into a higher MMR and I start to face people who are like actually communicating with their team
