The alternative is that there is the rare chance that a bad, missed offside call has large influence over a game of importance.

That should have been called back after like 3 looks at the replay If it's too close for the linesman to notice, then it's probably not actually going to have an effect on the play, especially if the goal happens a minute after they enter the zone. It's just a waste of time, and even then it's not a guarantee they'll get the call right.
