Also his Bobby Goren is legendary on the best Law & Order spinoff there ever was or will be.

VDO has so many great roles on his resume. Two of my favorite: he was one of the dumb cops who kicks off the plot in Strange Days, and he was Robert E. Howard (!) in the greatly underappreciated biopic The Whole Wide World. He was also a great Orson Welles in Ed Wood, and he was the the guest star of one of the best episodes ("Subway") of on the best TV series ever made (Homicide: Life on the Street).

What a great actor. Hell of an impressive range.

Subway is so loving good. I love Homicide.

The movie "Imposter" should have been terrible, in that it was quickly made adaptation of a Phillip K. Dick story that wasn't very well written, but they clearly spent all their money on the cast, with Gary Sinise and Vincent D'Onofrio doing a great riff on "The Fugitive" only in the future.

Also, Vinnie D's first movie was one of Troma's pre-Toxic Avenger sex comedies, "The First Turn On!"

You heard stories? I just assumed he was a whacko because he always plays a whacko. Like how Crispin Glover always plays awkward-to-the-point-of-seeming-alien weirdos because he's legitimately an awkward-to-the-point-of-seeming-alien weirdo in reality.

Glad to hear D'Onofrio is just a cool guy who's really good at acting.

He was supposedly very difficult to work with while filming Criminal Intent but it sounds like he was having actual, real mental issues so he gets a pass.

I believe there was a falling-out with the USA network - Jeff Goldblum was cast to replace him for a couple of seasons and USA ran ads with the slogan "It's better with Goldblum" for the duration (D'Onofrio and Kathryn Erbe came back for the final two seasons).

D'Onofrio as Goren was a pretty good Sherlock Holmes adaptation, but Criminal Intent itself was the weird L&O series that went on for years and years and years but never felt like a big deal the way the original one or SVU did.

Never seen CI and the ads never sold me on what the hell the difference was. Like, instead of a whodunit was it supposed to be more of a whydunit?

iirc, they were supposed to be the department that handled the "high profile" cases, like with celebrities and politicians and organized crime and stuff. Sometimes they really dropped the ball, having the reason for the high profile assignment not come out til like halfway through the case.

It rapidly dropped the pretense of being about Major Cases and just became "The show with Goren on it". Much like how real life SVU doesn't deal with child porn, real life Major Cases doesn't deal with homicides, but 70% of CI was dealing with serial killers.

I have been made aware of the awesomeness of VDO thanks to my wife. I previously knew him as the fat gently caress that gets reamed out in FMJ, but man the guy's just fun to watch. He was a really bright spot in The Magnificent 7 remake, goofy voice and all.

It was 'teen has braces which give her amazing and uncontrollable magneto/electricity powers, oh no how will she adapt to life'. Not a terrible premise but the cheapo pre-Flash animation made it abominable.

It's still leagues above Mcauley Culkin's Wishkid and Gary Coleman's cartoon about being an angel.

PepperAnn, on the other hand, is god tier good and deserves a blue ray release.

It was a follow-up to Marvels, and started in the 1970s where the first series left off. At one point it was going to be called Marvels 2 but apparently Busiek and Ross weren't interested and they changed it.

Busiek and Ross originally DID want to make a follow-up to Marvels, but Busiek's pitch got turned down. So, with some serious retooling, they turned it into "The Silver Age" for Astro City. The same core storyline was used for Astro City still however, and at the end of one of the collections Busiek prints up a few pages from the pitch write-up, with the Marvel names redacted.

I loved the show until the storyline where it's revealed Goren's the son of a serial killer, it felt so contrived and dumb, and I watch L&O accepting a certain level of that sort of thing . But I love D'Onofrio, I think he's supes underrated and I also enjoy that Eric Bogosian joins the show eventually. I always thought Bogosian would make a good Ben Urich.
