I have a coworker that said she spends 700/mo on groceries and another 3-500 on restaurants a month for just her and her husband, no kids. She also told me she was joining the local yachet club (a few minutes walk from her house) just so she could go to the club's restaurant and bar as there apparently are no other restaurants near their house.

I eat out for lunch at work every day and for dinner a couple nights a week and almost never spend more than $9 a day on food. $5 for a giant chicken gyro from a Turkish food cart is usually my most expensive meal. A crossfit membership (one of the more expensive gym memberships) with at least 1 class per week is $170 a month. The gym and food costs for that family are crazy and they are "trying" to be cheap and not actively splurging (by their standards). I don't know how that is even possible. I could see it if he was of the "we have bad habits and like to splurge" mindset, but he says they literally can't figure out how to find a cheaper gym or lower food costs - even with a stay at home parent!

Possible SSN theft due to autofillquote:Approximately three years ago, I signed up for an account through an acquaintance's computer, who I barely met about a week before. I recall that he had auto-fill turned on and when the application required SSN, I saw other SSNs. From there, I assumed that everything I put down was saved onto his computer. Unfortunately, I did not stop myself from filling out the application and continued to put all the information asked.

The payday loan guys seems to have neglected to mention if tjere was a prwpatment penalty provision in the contract and also how it wound up in collections. I will say refusing to accept payments and claiming you can't find the account are bullshit and probably fall under the deceptive, unfair and abusive practices regulations. They should have jist given him a number as to how much he needs to pay to terminate the contract early.

If you don't get into a school like that then you may as well go to a state school where the costs are manageable and scholarships are common. If they insist on going to a private college then that's on them and I wouldn't blame any parent for not contributing to that boondoggle. I got accepted to MIT but they didn't immediately offer me any scholarships, so I decided to go to a state university for my engineering degree. I eventually graduated with more money than I started with. GWM, BWL?

Someone was saying his mortgage is a bit high at 30% of his income and that it shouldn't be more than 28%. I don't think you're going to cope well with a smaller house and such a sizable family, especially when the mortgage is reasonable. Someone also went off about the car payment. They only spend 5 times as much on food as the car payment so clearly the car payment must be the problem. Even if going to MIT would have given you a 10% boost (totally making up numbers here) in starting salary, that could potentially more than make up for debt coming out of school. There's some interesting data about how people entering the job market during economic downturns - and have to accept lower salaries as a result - end up with significantly lower lifetime incomes.
