They're paying for 4 phone lines, so I am going to guess that at least one or two of the kids old enough to do some yard work. But yea, that $100 isn't really important when there is literally $2500 simply not included in the line items at all.

There are some really fancy gyms out that can cost this much, complete with valet parking. It's not a gym as much as it is a place to socialize and be seen, kind of like Starbucks but with treadmills.

Agreed. But what he said is so far out there, I want to see his reply first. Basically, his post was the rough (economics) equivalent of denying climate change.

Just to clarify things, we are not discussing some high-end theoretical poo poo that takes an advanced economics degree to debate. We are discussing level 1000 material, at best level 2000 material. And he is reallllly poo poo.

A crossfit membership (one of the more expensive gym memberships) with at least 1 class per week is $170 a month.

The gym and food costs for that family are crazy and they are "trying" to be cheap and not actively splurging (by their standards). I don't know how that is even possible.

I could see it if he was of the "we have bad habits and like to splurge" mindset, but he says they literally can't figure out how to find a cheaper gym or lower food costs - even with a stay at home parent!

quote:

In February I took a loan for $500, it was supposed to be for a gift for my wife. I Took the loan out because I didn't want my wife to see what I got her or what I was planning for her birthday, I have a side business where I can earn money that doesn't get deposited directly into my bank account. They took one payment auto drafted after I had made it clear I'm going to come in and pay in person cash in hand.

When I went in to pay they could not find my name in the system, therefore they said I wasn't able to make any payments towards my account ahead of time and they would all have to be auto drafted. Out of frustration I call the managers, I call their headquarters and they tell me that they have a new system and they couldn't find my account, after auto withdrawing from my account four times of 75$, my account balance still remained what I had initially taken out for the loan.

This frustrates me because I had intended to pay off the loan immediately or at least in two payments of $250, I feel like I was held in the loan and they auto drafted everything that would've been interest for the loan and after they collected all of a sudden my account was back in the system and they were ready to accept full payment.

I get that I signed a contract that says I have to pay $75 auto pay when it's due, but I feel it's not right that I had the cash in hand and they would not allow me to pay my account off.

They said the reason for this is they will not let out a loan if they're not going to make money on it, I know loan places need to make money but I feel if I have the money to make a payment they should have to accept it and not make me pay the minimum. Now it is at collections and they want $570, and they're willing to accept it all in one payment. I know my first mistake was taking the loan in the first place, but I've never had a loan place not allow me to make a payment. I am not trying to get out of paying I just feel cheated and want to pay what I had originally borrowed because I intended to pay it off right away.

I was hoping somebody could give me some advice about how to go about this, I'm receiving calls from all kinds of random numbers and when I answer no one is speaking, and when I try to explain my situation to chat me or collections they say I'm lying and that never happened, but they admit they do you have a new system. Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thank you

Possible SSN theft due to autofill

quote:

Approximately three years ago, I signed up for an account through an acquaintance's computer, who I barely met about a week before. I recall that he had auto-fill turned on and when the application required SSN, I saw other SSNs. From there, I assumed that everything I put down was saved onto his computer. Unfortunately, I did not stop myself from filling out the application and continued to put all the information asked.

I have not been in contact with him after a month I signed up, but my paranoia for identity theft grew since my SSN was saved onto his computer, who I do not know very well. Since then, I check my annual free credit reports to see if anything is wrong, but everything looks in order.
My main concern is not whether he will do anything malicious with my SSN down the future, but when he does it. I am unsure whether he will do anything at all, but I assume he eventually will. I was wondering what ways there are to help smother my paranoia of potentially being an identity theft target.

The payday loan guys seems to have neglected to mention if tjere was a prwpatment penalty provision in the contract and also how it wound up in collections.

I will say refusing to accept payments and claiming you can't find the account are bullshit and probably fall under the deceptive, unfair and abusive practices regulations. They should have jist given him a number as to how much he needs to pay to terminate the contract early.

The way I see it, if they get into a top tier school like Harvard or MIT then the savings don't matter too much, because those schools have tons of financial aid and the kid is going to make way more than I ever will anyway so some debt won't hurt. If you don't get into a school like that then you may as well go to a state school where the costs are manageable and scholarships are common. If they insist on going to a private college then that's on them and I wouldn't blame any parent for not contributing to that boondoggle.

I got accepted to MIT but they didn't immediately offer me any scholarships, so I decided to go to a state university for my engineering degree. I eventually graduated with more money than I started with. GWM, BWL?

I'm always amused by the reddit comments that go off on a tangent. Someone was saying his mortgage is a bit high at 30% of his income and that it shouldn't be more than 28%. I don't think you're going to cope well with a smaller house and such a sizable family, especially when the mortgage is reasonable. Someone also went off about the car payment. They only spend 5 times as much on food as the car payment so clearly the car payment must be the problem.

GWM and GWL. While going to MIT would be great engineering is all about being able to do engineering design. Prestige doesn't mean anything in this context.

I'm not sure if there's a good answer there. Even if going to MIT would have given you a 10% boost (totally making up numbers here) in starting salary, that could potentially more than make up for debt coming out of school. There's some interesting data about how people entering the job market during economic downturns - and have to accept lower salaries as a result - end up with significantly lower lifetime incomes.
