It's still a bad move, but no worse than a lot of the terrible international blunders we've made over the past 17 years. This is probably the beginning of the end of 70 years of carefully crafted US policy to make every country dependent on us. Weather this will be better or worse, long-term, is hard to tell. We are truly in uncharted waters. One thing is for sure, Putin must be happy as gently caress as US power and influence crumbles.

Also, thanks for reminding me, I gotta look into whether I can get German citizenship under the restoration laws. I'll have my wife make an appointment at the embassy for me. You know, just in case they're right.

Weather this will be better or worse, long-term, is hard to tell. We are truly in uncharted waters. American primacy is the result of both policy and the facts on the ground, one of these being a significant portion of the world, including China and Germany, are export economies that use the massive US economy to absorb their exports and keep their economies humming. That's another thing that's hilarious about the notion of punitive German action against the US. The USA is a massive market for German goods. Germany is not a massive market for US goods (it's a large market for US services though). The US running a massive trade deficit with virtually the entire planet is hugely important to US power.

Germany's trade surplus and policies forcing the ECB to maintain deflation in the Eurozone are a short-term boon to Germany relative to its neighbors, but it is setting Germany up for a major economic catastrophe down the road. Not to mention that Germany's national defense is 100% reliant on the US military and other countries acting as a human shield. Fascism will probably be fairly popular again in Germany in 2030.

To a smart Democratic Party this would cement that whoever is on the 2020 ticket will run on a platform of climate change and staying in the Paris agreement. "If you elect me, we will stay in the Paris agreement, we will not abandon our children and our children's children" We'll see if the Democratic Party is smart.

Reminder that the accord says every country can determine their own standards so when Trump says he wants a better deal, he's just lying outright. edit: or is just unaware of what he's removing us from which is probably more likely.

Leon Trotsky 2012 posted:Germany's trade surplus and policies forcing the ECB to maintain deflation in the Eurozone are a short-term boon to Germany relative to its neighbors, but it is setting Germany up for a major economic catastrophe down the road. Yeah, in line with what I was talking about with a significant portion of US influence coming from its massive economy combined with its willingness to run trade deficits with the rest of the world, ironically this means that the US is likely to be better shielded than most from the exporters crisis that we're already seeing the beginnings of (mostly in China.) It's a really really really good thing that reversing that deficit is virtually impossible.
