Yeah, remember that Trump's idea of "renegotiation" is taking a hundred million dollar loan from a bank, losing it, then sitting down with the bank to "renegotiate" and basically telling them that if they don't forgive a huge portion of the loan, he is declaring bankruptcy, which means they get none of the money back. Then spinning the whole thing as "see? this way, everyone benefits. the art of the deal!"

Even under the most optimistic estimate of the pullout's effect, that is, the rest of the world redoubles its efforts and strengthens the plan without us, will any country ever bother to enter into a multilateral agreement with us again? If we managed to get unified Democratic control of government, every other country will be right to assume that the Republicans will sabotage any treaty once they get into office.

As it stands, it doesn't really matter. The US is too large and powerful to ignore based on who controls the government. The world's sole superpower simply not being in the Paris agreement already defangs it in a noticeable way.

The silver lining is that Washington not being party to the Paris Agreement doesn't completely alter the course of technology. The great irony in all this is that the GOP's vaunted free market is actually on the opposite side of this particular issue, and American companies are going to continue to invest in and develop clean energy technology regardless of who is in the White House, and then make $$$ selling it to countries that actually do have government policy to reduce emissions.

I'm increasingly of the opinion that there should be a simple test of basic connections to reality: did the Holocaust happen, who was our last president, etc. If they don't pass, the vote doesn't get counted. I can see how it seems harsh, but it seems like the only option that even has a remote chance of being implemented.

Coal peaked in the mid 2000s in terms of capacity and since then it's down 20%. This decline is accelerating. Natural gas is eating coal's lunch and it's about to give it a swirly. It's not an issue of regulations and costs. You can't prop up coal at this point without heavy subsidies.
