obama was far better at bullshitting the american people than hillary clinton. if biden ran and got the nomination, he probably would have won because he's also good at bullshitting (and hiding his mainstream dem views behind charm and some semblance of working class cred)

I think Biden could have pulled off an HW and ran off of being Obama's 3rd term.

He'd have probably have also been more perceptive on the Sanders revolution that occurred within the left wing of the party, the trump effect that happened in the rust belt/"blue wall". He'd have beaten Trump in debates by putting on the charm and speaking in a manner similar to him.

I think what could have helped the Dems in the primary would have been to have added Biden, Warren and Franken to compete? It'd have probably lessened the divisions between the centrist wing and lefty wing.

I'm glad you got healthcare, but there's 28 million more people that actually needed it after Obamacare. Plus another million or two or more because access to health insurance is not an actual guarantee of access to health care because the private sector rewards being a horrendous loving lecherous cretin instead of actually doing a good thing.

Obama also set the new standard for what and who can be prosecuted when whistleblowing to effectively criminalise bringing abuses of power to light.

Oh also he did all this then handed the controls to a mentally unhinged pisspig

I'll never understand people defending him taking money from goldman sachs at the end of his presidency and jet skiing with millionaires.

The excuse from Trevor Noah was "Well so you're expecting the first black president to also be the first president to NOT take money from Wall Street? hmmm? gently caress you!" :smug:

....

Except he wouldn't be the first president to not take money after office. Harry Truman and Jimmy Carter both did public service for the rest of their lives. Obama also prided himself as being a grass roots "Community organizer" -type. What he did during office was actually cut ties with various groups that championed that and his track record continues to show it.

The best thing about Obama is that he could have reigned in Comey or directed intelligence resources towards the 'Russia problem' at any time and decided not to in order to preserve his impartiality in an election that featured Donald Trump.

Nah, the best thing about Comey is he was part of the west wing reach across the aisle bullshit and the republicans, being republicans, gave nothing in return.

Now people are attacking her and she says it's a systematic campaign of defamation and bullying by the Trump family itself.

It's part of the cycle of violence. Someone makes violent imagery, the other side uses it as an excuse to do poo poo like that, more violent imagery comes out in protest, etc. The Republicans are already using the severed head imagery in their campaign ads, it'll probably be pretty effective.

so there's that to think about too :v:

I think Jim Norton once summed it up once about the "anger" against the Iraq war back in the day.

"Doing comedy, art, whatever against the war is actually the safest possible route in some ways"

I mean sans the Dixie Chicks? It really didn't hurt Green Day, System of a Down and various comedians who did the "rock against bush" schtick. In fact it really did come across as some sort of psuedo Dead Kennedy's marketing gimmick. Same with doing things against Trump. It's not really a "brave" stance to say Trump is a dipshit. It's kinda like saying the Sky is blue or "I like Pizza" at this point.

It just comes across as very weak and begging people to clutch pearls over it. This isn't something like Sinead O'Connor ripping up the Pope's picture on SNL which did in fact go against a massive amount of people.

being publically against the iraq war in the lead-up was generally bad for your career

Soon after the show's cancellation, an internal MSNBC memo was leaked to the press stating that Donahue should be fired because he opposed the imminent U.S. invasion of Iraq and that he would be a "difficult public face for NBC in a time of war."[20] Donahue commented in 2007 that the management of MSNBC, owned by General Electric and Comcast, required that "we have two conservative (guests) for every liberal. I was counted as two liberals."[21]

The lead up? Sure. No argument from me. Phil Donahue got hosed over big time. The media (NYT, CNN, ABC) reported lies parroted by various assholes in the bush adminstraton.

Around 2004 or so? Different story. It became actually "popular" for Green Day, System of a Down and a slew of various artists to be 'against it". Michael Moore got a hit film out of it, etc. It's not like they were "wrong" . They were actually on the right side of the issue. It just became really overbearing and preachy.

It depends on the woman and how much privlege, power she has.

people like Meryl Streep have not had their livilihoods effected due to "speaking out" against various things that would make middle america uncomfortable hearing. I don't think the same could be said about some school teacher in rural iowa speaking out and against various policies of the US.

I'm trying to think of an equal person/situation to Kathy Griffin. Anyone have any by chance?

Maher is an idiot who made a bad, unfunny joke.

Griffin is an idiot who tried to make an unfunny edgy picture.

I don't feel sympathy for them in terms of possible consequences, but I do think that a lot of people are focusing on the speck of dust in someone's eye while ignoring the giant plank that's right in front of them.

I also don't think a forced apology does a single drat thing. If Griffin was sincerely sorry about it and reached out to privately apologize? That's fine. I don't care. But I don't want to see this cry fest from someone because they know they're going to get fired. What's said is said. What's done is done.

Nothing is going to change what was done or said.
