Carlson makes the most sense given his contract situation and trade value around the league for right handed defensemen but honestly I'm warming up to the idea of trading Ovechkin. Not because of his intangibles or leadership but because he's just not worth his contract any more and it looks like he's slowing down. $9.5M off the books can get a lot. I like Hornqvist a lot and am very glad the Penguins traded Neal for him, but I think Bylsma was waaaaaay more the problem than Neal was in that area. Then of course came Mike Johnston but he was so clueless and incompetent at everything that nothing changed in that area, they just got worse at hockey to boot. Sullivan was the guy that really turned it around, 2 years after Neal was gone. IMO the Penguins benefited a ton from teams continuing to employ the "goon it up, they'll freak out" strategy for a good year after it stopped working, and only in the last few months has the league realized it doesn't work anymore. Anyway tl;dr, getting rid of that piece of poo poo Neal helped but the no-self-control culture problem was mostly Bylsma's doing. I'm now convinced that Bylsma's only redeeming quality as a coach is that he is not Michel Therrien

Neal was a very good goal scorer on the Penguins and he meshed perfectly with Malkin. His attitude sucked, but that doesn't detract from his ability to put pucks in nets. Cross posting from the finals topic but CBJ Sprague posted an interview with Torts where he said how much more respect he has for the Penguins because Sullivan is there holding them accountable and relates a story about Sullivan telling Malkin to shut the gently caress up while he's talking to a referee after being there for like two games. I think it really highlights how little control Bylsma had over that team. It was fine when he was replacing Therrien and they were tired of his shift, but it really emphasizes him being too much of a players' coach. Neal has still been kind of a dick since he was traded so maybe it's not all Bylsma's fault though.

Thinking about the culture change the Penguins have had under Sulllivsn really hits me hard with just how unbelievably bad a coach Mike Johnston was. Under Bylsma the Penguins were an elite team every year and then would poo poo themselves in the playoffs. Then Johnston took over and all of a sudden they were the last team to just barely reach the playoffs and got summarily waxed in the first round in probably the most boring 5 game series ever played. Then they were well on their way to missing the playoffs altogether when Johnston was replaced with Sullivan, and then abruptly they're utterly dominant and now are on the verge of back to back Cups. It staggers the mind how bad Johnston was, it really does. Granted doing things like trading Perron for Hagelin and Scuderi for Daley helped a lot, but that was symptomatic: Johnston loved Perron and Scuderi. They fit his breathtakingly retarded System.

Anyway, trip update! The Scots don't really know what hockey is. A bartender said he watches sometimes and that ice hockey is like Hurling but more violent. However, once you've befriended them, hooligans will passionately talk trash about any team/thing you're against; so there's at least a bit of anti-Pens sentiment out there in Glasgow. The Dutch dig hockey. Lots of Bruins fans for some reason. Must be all the drugs. Games being at 2am local sucked, but pointing at priceless art vol. 2 turned out okay.
