There were circles beneath her eyes, and her expression also revealed the slightest hints of exhaustion. But a fierce will shone in her eyes. --It wasn't long before she heard the sound of a car engine driving towards her from the other side. The car passed through the gate, then drove up next to the woman and stopped. It was a red French sedan. The driver's door opened, revealing a woman in a suit.

The woman quickly replied to Ena's greeting.

Thank you for taking the trouble to come here, Commissioner Tsubakiyama.

The woman-- Miyoko Tenkawa-- had received a call from Ena and waited for her to arrive at the city gate. Not to be outdone by Miyoko, Ena's face looked just as exhausted. But anyone could see that her eyes matched Miyoko's in intensity.

It's been a long time since we've met in person, hasn't it? How are things on your end?
Dealing with the whole aftermath without sleep or rest is starting to catch up to me.
I thought so... You look quite worn out.
Oh no, this is nothing... It's a trivial matter compared to the suffering those children have been through.

Incidentally, if you don't mind me asking, how are they doing...?
Please rest assured. Your son and everyone else are in the custody of the ESP Bureau-- Their injuries are currently being treated at a safe place.
Thank goodness... and thank you.
No, it's only a matter of course. Though the situation has gotten much worse as a result of how slow we at the ESP Bureau were to act.
Don't be ridiculous... When you get down to it, this incident was entirely our responsibility, and by extension, my own. You see, I had considered trying to save the test subjects, but in the end, I could just never bring myself to act.

Miyoko looked down in shame when she said that.

...You mean Ms. Nagisa, don't you?
Yes... I may not have been in charge of her, but even so-- I had hoped that I could someday let her go free into the outside world along with Yuuri and Yui.

Miyoko gritted her teeth. Ena took her hand and spoke.

Professor... I know how you feel. But the time for regrets will have to wait for later. Now's not the time. There is much we have to do, after all.
...You're right.

Miyoko gripped Ena's hand back and spoke.

To avenge Nagisa and the others.
And to ensure closure for everyone whose lives were trampled on or snuffed out along the way--

Suddenly, Miyoko heard more cars approaching from beyond the city gate. There wasn't just one or two of them. Over ten cars filled with members of the ESP Bureau passed through the gates and invaded Rokumei City.

Watase, whose name was replaced with the designation ''Number 0087'', waited in his cell at a detention center for the day of his trial to arrive.

(... drat, I'm bored.)

Watase sighed in his single-man cell set aside for political prisoners. With no one to talk to, he had nothing to do until his trial date. He at least did some muscle training to kill the time, but it wasn't like he could do that all day long.

(Is it time for my trial yet...?)

Just as he thought that, he heard the voice of the prison guard calling from outside.

And what would that be?
I was wondering if you'd help us out with our investigation.

--Essentially, it's a kind of plea-bargaining. Japan has no plea-bargaining system, but you can achieve a similar result with the application of multiple trial-related systems.

Watase pondered the matter once he'd heard Ena's side of the story. He had no guilt about ''selling out his comrades''. Now that he knew it was Q's indiscriminate acts of destruction that had sent everyone's lives off track, he too wished for the organization's elimination.

Well? Doesn't sound bad, does it?
Yeah, you've got that right. But there's one thing that bothers me-- Why are you going so far for me?

I'm pretty much a nobody in the overall organization. Your investigation would probably proceed just fine without my help. So why are you going out of your way to make a deal with me?

He didn't hesitate for a moment, no matter what stood in his way. That man was probably gone forever. If that man had been a radiant light, then would that make the current Watase a dark shadow?

(... No.)

Watase clenched his fists with that thought. He felt the flame in his chest that had sputtered out in the detention center roar to life once again.

Ena said that with a self-deprecating laugh. But Watase answered clearly.

A faint tinge of red covered Ena's cheeks. She looked away and muttered something in a tiny voice.

Ena quickly glossed over what she'd been mumbling and looked Watase in the eye.

The only other work by the scriptwriter before disappearing from the anime industry was the scenario for ''Esper Suit Beyonder''. Stargazing was apparently Salyu's hobby. She had invited Yuuri and Mashiro occasionally too.

Salyu, are you having fun?
Yes. The sky changes with time, and the constellations change with the seasons. Quite interesting.

Ena replied with a sigh in her voice.

...It takes a huge incident like this one to wake people up before they notice these problems, huh. Even if they sense there's a problem, they never go looking for it... And when more people get involved, their own individual circumstances and definitions of justice get tangled up, and eventually it becomes difficult to tell who's in the wrong.

Whose fault was it that caused that insane incident-- the people running LABO, or Rokumei's city officials? Was it the fault of that pharmaceutical company that was business partners with LABO?

Perhaps ''Eishi Azumi'', the man who developed Alice's BC abilities, or ''Section Chief Tsubakiyama'', Teach's father who suggested the establishment of LABO, were also factors.

The malice of individuals may seem utterly trivial. But when one's malice spreads to others, it amplifies, then stagnates and decays. Sometimes it decays enough for the people in on the whole problem to not even notice it...

...But still, if there are problems, someone's gotta fix them, right?
Indeed. But even if you know of a problem, it is difficult to build the courage to correct it.
And sometimes, even those with that courage go about correcting the problems in decisively illegal ways.

The old man and I exchange wry smiles. Kazami mutters sadly.

...If it takes the loss of others for people to finally realize that... Then will we be forced to keep losing all sorts of things in the future?
...
If so, then does that mean... Nagisa's death was an inevitable part of that process?
No chance in hell.

I instantly answer Kazami's question.

We must never assume it's 'inevitable' for there to be victims... Never. There are those who can't be forgiven. Every problem in this world has its own root cause. That's a fact. If many people are involved, then they should all take responsibility.
Oh my, you're sounding rather full of yourself there.
You've got no right to talk, Mr. Ex-Terrorist~
Yeah, I was a terrorist-- the worst son of a bitch there was. If you just look at the incident last year by itself, then I deserve more blame for it than anyone else. Property damage, assembling with dangerous weapons, assault, violating the Swords and Firearms Control Law-- all of that and more is on me. It's a miracle a scoundrel like me got released in just a year. ...But I've atoned for my sins. So I figured that now that I'm out of prison, I'll work to make this world a better place. This time without taking up arms. I'm in no position to face the world... but at the very least, my intentions are true.

After I finish giving that rather self-indulgent speech, I expect to find everyone staring at me oddly, but--

...Well, that's just the kind of person you always were...
Well, you -have- gotten the resolve to bear those sins, right?
Besides, without the opportunity to start things over, there would be nobody left to take responsibility.
...I have no right to be saying anything, but I agree with you for now, Captain Kasasagi.

The four of them accept me with wry smiles. I mentally breathe a sigh of relief. Kazami then speaks up.

But that aside... I hope others can change just like you have. If they don't, then Nagisa and the others will truly never rest in peace.
...Sis... I'm sure they can change this time. When you look back on history, things like this have happened over and over again. Like with the Chernobyl power plant disaster or the incident at LABO last year. Both may have been dark chapters in history... TIP: Before Crime * After Days
Category: Fiction

A phenomenon of dramatic transition in society as proposed in a book of the same name by BC researcher and sociologist Chikage Sonomura.

In short, ''A society's values suddenly change when a major transgression is brought to the attention of its people''.

The chain of events set off by the explosions in Rokumei City's 6th Laboratory of Atomic and Biological Organization on September 16, 2030 exposed the dark side of Rokumei City to broad daylight, bringing about a significant paradigm shift. How do we face the issue of BC? The issue of Communicators? The issue of society as a whole?--

The people must decide and carve the future for themselves. But Natsuhiko Tenkawa, Watase Kasasagi, and all the concerned parties of the incident around them are most likely heading towards a good direction. Unfortunately, it is impossible to know for sure.

Huh?
You've never heard of it? It's a proposal this sociologist made about the phenomenon of drastic transitions in society. It refers to when there's a sudden change in society's value systems when you compare them before a 'crime' is exposed and in the days after. That's exactly how it is in this case. Society changes after something once thought 'normal' becomes deemed as 'strange' and 'criminal'. We have to fix what's wrong and we have to change ourselves too. If we don't, then our society will just get crazier and crazier... That's what almost everyone thinks.
I see...

That's certainly the case with me personally. I changed greatly ''before committing that crime'' and in ''the days after''. I don't mean to advocate crime at all, but I definitely thought that things needed to change. Both in this world and in myself...

...We've been able to live 'in the days after' we came face to face with that major incident. So we mustn't waste those days.

I look at Kazami after I say that.

Hey, Kazami. I swear I'll make this society as good of a place as I can. If we can change, then our surroundings should be able to change little by little too.

No-- they have to change. Even if that's a naive ideal of mine, I can't do anything unless I believe that. My true atonement is to devote the rest of my life to ensure that change. Kazami then finally smiles as if she can tell what I'm thinking.

...That's right. Malice may spread from person to person... But that's because good will does as well.
Yeah, exactly.

A thought crosses my mind when I hear that. Indeed-- when people come in contact, they definitely have some sort of mutual effect on each other. They then respond to that change, and their relationship starts to change too. If there is good will and the will to understand one another in there, then their relationship will surely turn out good. Much like how our relationships changed greatly in those nine hours. When I think about that, I suddenly start to wonder how ''he'' is doing.

Hey, Teach... about the brat...
Hmm?
Is he doing well? You would know, wouldn't you?
Oh my, are you actually worried about him?
Well, a little...
Oh brother, you sure ain't honest.
Well, this is just what things are like between two men.
I thought you'd become a bit calmer recently, but I guess that part of you hasn't changed a bit, has it?

I break out into a wry smile from Kazami and the others' comments.

--Of course I'm worried. How could I not be? We nearly fought to the death once. That's why I offer a silent prayer for his sake. I pray that he's living his life peacefully in those ''days after''.

Oh my, I was just joking. You kids need to go to school. I'm working hard so that you kids can live like normal kids, after all.
...I see.

I really think she's a great mom. She's such a loving, capable, and strong person, and to be honest, I'm proud to be her son. --But I can't stay under her wing forever.

{Yuuri. Mashiro. Salyu. Let's help Mom out even if she insists we don't.}
{Of course!}
{Sure thing.}
Mmm.

We exchange those words with a smile.

Yuuri murmurs as we walk down the road to Rokumei Cemetery.

Still, this place sure brings me back...
Yeah... it has been about 10 years since you've walked here, right, Yuuri?
Yes. Say, Hikorin, do you remember what I said when we reunited in LABO a year ago?
I do. You said you wanted us all to walk in this park again together, right?
Yeah... I'm so glad my wish was granted...

Mashiro and the others smile as Yuuri's eyes begin to water.

...We can walk here as much as we want now, Yuuri.
Yes. I'll walk with you as much as you'd like.
...Right.

I nod at those words too. --The girls seem to be happy that we came back to this city.

It's the city that Mashiro loves, the city Salyu found where she belonged, and the city where Yuuri wanted to walk freely. The city we lived in, and the city we've finally returned to. We can choose our destination with our own free will. Some may take that privilege for granted-- But it truly is a blessing.

...Say, guys.
What is it?
We're alive, aren't we? We took back freedom with our own hands, didn't we?
Mmm. It sounds moving when you say it seriously like that.
...True. You all did well to come back alive...
It's thanks to the nine of us, and you too, Dr. Tenkawa.

Yes. Most of all, it's thanks to ''him''. Not that I'll ever say it, though. It's embarrassing. My feelings about him still haven't changed. He's a partner I feel grateful to, and he deserves my respect, but-- we're completely different, all the way from our heights to our ideologies. We can't even reach mutual understanding. As that thought crosses my mind, Yuuri suddenly smiles.

Well, no, actually... It might not have been just us.
Huh?

As we look at her in confusion, Yuuri looks off into the distance.

Guys, don't you remember? Back then, inside LABO, about ten minutes before the bomb exploded... There was that intense flashback, remember?
Yeah. There's no way I could forget that.
That was so mysterious, huh? I wonder what that was?
In any case, it was a lifesaver. It coincidentally revealed an escape method.
Actually, that might not have been a coincidence.

Mom nods at Yuuri's proposition.

I've heard about the matter from Yuuri. She said that BC used in the past came back in a particular sequence, correct?
Y-yeah.
Furthermore, there was meaningful information in that sequence, meaning... Some sort of 'consciousness' was possibly born within LABO at that time.
A consciousness?
Actually, Yuuri and I were trying to perform that sort of experiment that day. An experiment to see if the stagnation and accumulation of information energy emitted with BC could create a consciousness.
In other words, an experiment to create a spirit.
A spirit...
Do you think one was made, Mom?
Well, it's hard to tell at this point. We can't verify it either.
Good point...
But you know, Hikorin, I think-- I felt there really was something within LABO back then.

TIP: Matryoshka
Category: Fiction

''I felt there really was something within LABO back then'', Yuuri said softly with a smile, surrounded by the melancholy fall foliage of Rokumei Park.

The closed space we call the cranium is filled with M particles that mutually interact with the brain to accumulate information energy-- that was my answer to the question ''where is the self, and how is its consciousness formed?''. And so I decided to run a large-scale experiment to simulate a brain in LABO's Area N one year ago, on September 16, 2030. If we filled a BC-insulated closed space with WX particles and emitted the full volume of information energy from a person's brain into that space, would it create another ''spirit''...?

In the end, the experiment was forcefully canceled by a certain ''incident''. But in what might be a blessing from misfortune, the experiment still was carried out in a way I hadn't expected. The BC-insulated bulkheads created a closed space. The malfunctioning amplifier generated a high concentration of WX particles. The incessant use of BC converted those WX particles into a dense concentration of high information energy M particles-- These three conditions were met in LABO that day, turning the entire facility into a facsimile of a human brain. LA BO became a matryoshka enveloping Natsuhiko and Yuuri. So in the end, was a consciousness born?

If it was born, then is Natsuhiko right? Is that consciousness still drifting about somewhere, perceiving these very thoughts of mine right now? I have no way of knowing for sure. But perhaps--

I think it had been drifting in LABO ever since the WX particle amplifier was activated at 6 AM. I think that at first, it was just an empty spirit without a will of its own, unable to do anything but observe the events happening there. But as it received our BC little by little, it took in the information stored within. And after it was full to the brim with information energy-- Mr. Spirit was finally born with a will of its own.
Born? And then what?
You see, I get the feeling Mr. Spirit was the one who helped us out in the end. Mr. Spirit found an escape route and tried to convey it to us...
So you mean that's what the flashback was?
Yes. I mean, Mr. Spirit doesn't have a way to convey its will to us on its own, does it? So instead, it pieced together all the important information it had to point out the escape route for us, I guess-...
Yuuri, you're such a romanticist. Not that I have a problem with that or anything.
I still think it was just a coincidence.
I can't comment on it either way. Not until we run a reproducible experiment, that is.
Aww~

Yuuri sulks at how none of them agree with her. She looks at me as if to ask me to back her up.

...Hey, Hikorin, what do you think? Don't you feel like someone helped us out back then?

I answer the question with a smile.

Yeah. Of course I do.
Really?
Good grief. Natsuhiko, you always agree with Yuuri.
Good grief.
Good grief indeed.
No, no, no, I've always been thinking that. It really did feel like someone helped us out back then.
Is that so? Well, let's just leave it at that, I guess.

Everyone smiles once Mashiro says that. I smile too as I secretly think to myself. --I do agree with Yuuri's opinion for the most part, but there's actually one part I disagree with:

♪ BGM: Rondo Carrousel (Music Box)

Weren't we helped out way before that...? When I think about it, whenever I had to make an important judgment call whether to trust someone or to doubt them... It felt like some kind of vague ''feeling'' was pushing me from behind. Well, if I talked about it out loud, I don't think anyone would understand, so I'll just keep it to myself for now.

... But still, guys.
Hmm?
If Mr. Spirit really was born... Then where do you think it went?
Hmm, well, assuming it did get born... LABO did get blown up back then...
So would it have disappeared in the explosion?
Well, the BC particle energy did decay.
No, maybe-- Maybe once the insulators were destroyed, it left LABO and now it's drifting about somewhere.

--Prof. Tsubakiyama once said in a lecture... That all bodies of energy mix upon contact. So even if the BC particle energy did decay, that doesn't mean it disappeared completely. So perhaps it was released from LABO's dark facility and spread to all corners of the world. Though if that were the case, then I guess the spirit's consciousness would start fading too. It'll probably never try to speak to us again. After all, for its nine hours of existence, it used quite unreliable communication.

...But it still left us with something precious. What that newborn spirit conveyed to us-- --was a ''will'' that desired to connect people together. The wish to share minds and walk side by side.

It will remain in the minds of those I came in contact with. My wish will never be lost-- It will stay with you, forever.

And there we go. That is the ''Grand End (or what I call the ''true ending'') for Route Double, and therefore also for the game, Root Double. That is the end of this story.

...however, we're not quite done yet. Think back. Way back. Like, way, *way* back. Like, way, *way*, *WAY* back. As in ''literally the first paragraph of the LP'' back.

TheMcD posted:

Root Double -Before Crime * After Days- Xtend Edition - henceforth referred to as ''Root Double'' - is a visual novel by Regista. The original version was released on XBox 360 and PC in 2012, then the game got an updated rerelease on PS3 and the PS Vita called the Xtend Edition with extra content. However, all of this was Japan-only. Then, a campaign on Kickstarter was launched to bring the game to the English-speaking world, it reached its goal of 135.000$, and Root Double found its way to Steam in April of 2016.

Did you ever wonder what exactly this ''extra content'' is? Well, I'm not 100% sure myself - there's some small things in the main game that were added or changed with the Xtend Edition, from what I can tell, but that's not the major part.

The major part is this. The ''Xtend Episode'' - extra scenes for every main character that don't particularly connect in any way. Now, some of these extra scenes are just retreads of what we've seen in the RAM parts, but other scenes are completely original and have stuff that we wouldn't get to see otherwise.

And here's our playing log, now that we've finished the main game. All CGs, all the music, and all the endings. The scenes remaining are a bit high, given that a fair share of the scenes are stuff we've pretty much already seen, just with an ''Xe:'' at the front.

So, next time, we're going to start looking at the Xtend Episode.

I just imagine that there was some sort of visual novel guru they contacted for their story. They had a meeting, and the first thing he does is get up, walk up to a whiteboard, and write "BC AD" on it. Then he keels over and dies from a heart attack. So figuring it was important, they tried to get that combination into their game somehow, making their sci-fi power "Beyond Communication", the drug that counteracts it "Alone Desire", and calling their routes "Before", "Current", "After" and "Double", but realized they probably also want that combination in the game's title. They couldn't call it "Beyond Communication * Alone Desire", that would sound even more stupid. So they wracked their brains and came up with "Before Crime * After Days", then stuck an explanation for the bloody thing at the end of the game, hoping people would just let it slide.

And, well, yeah, I'm just going to let it slide. It does sound dumb, though.

Or, to put it differently, is there a reason I can't use the Scene Skip feature to just jump through them in about ten seconds? I'm not particularly fond of hammering through scenes, and since they have a different name (due to having an "Xe:" in front), I can't skip through using the normal Skip feature.

So, now it's time for the final part of the game, the Xtend Episode.

Upon starting the Xtend Episode, we're greeted by another bible quote, and are given an intro chapter to bring us into the episode.

♪ BGM: Convergence

They sank down into their seats in the helicopter. Each of their faces expressed both the relief of having survived and the joy that the others survived as well.

Yeah... getting out of there alive really was a bit of a gamble, wasn't it?
In any case, thanks, Mashiro. Good job catching my telepathy and coming to pick us up.
Well of course I caught it. I waited for like forever for it to come. But Salyu's the real MVP here, you know? She instructed the pilot to keep the chopper on standby in the air so that we wouldn't leave your telepathy range.
I was anxious because I was unsure of the range. But I'm glad it reached. When we saw you guys from up above... I cried a little.
Hahah... Salyu, you've sure become a bit of a crybaby, haven't you?
Shut up, Natsuhiko.

Salyu reached out her hand and softly slapped Natsuhiko on the cheeks. Yuuri and Mashiro smiled quietly as they watched. As that was going on, the adults talked amongst themselves as well.

Yes...

Kazami was sitting near Nagisa's body when she answered.

...This girl told me that as long as I remember her, she'd always be with me. That I can always see her again as long as I remember... So I should be able to bear this sadness. Now that I've been able to see her again one last time... I think that's my one solace...

Kazami said no more. Jun softly grasped her hand beside her.

Sis... let's hold a proper service for Nagisa, together...
...Yes, we should...

Kazami responded as she wiped the tears away from the corners of her eyes. Watase quietly wrapped his arm around her shoulders. And that's when Ena finally broke her silence with an anxious tone in her voice.

...So, Captain Kasasagi, Mr. Ukita... What are you two going to do now?
...Turn ourselves in, obviously.
Indeed... We should let our crimes be judged by the public.
So once we get to the ESP Bureau, arrest the old man and me.
I see... Understood. We at the ESP Bureau have the right to arrest... so I'll deliver you to the court personally.
Yeah, that's fine.

Watase then looked to the kids. He spoke in a low voice to Natsuhiko, who was leaning against the helicopter seat.

...Hey, Natsuhiko.
...Hmm?
I plan to spend all my days after this atoning for my crimes.
Me too. We went down the wrong route... and we need to admit that, or else nothing will change.
...Even if my sentence ends before my days are up, I'll keep atoning after I'm released. Our crimes will never fade. But regardless, the reason I chose to atone... is all thanks to you. Thanks, Natsuhiko.
Hahah... You don't have to thank me for that. I was just thinking that you of all people would want to make amends... So I... ...

...Natsuhiko cut off there. His sudden silence prompted Yuuri to peer into his face.

...Hikorin?
...
...Did he fall asleep? Guess he must be worn out...
It's only natural, isn't it...? That boy wore down his own mind fighting to save us.
That's right... You did good, Natsuhiko.
When I first met him, I thought he was kind of a wimp. But he really is a sturdy boy, huh?
...As a fellow man, I salute you. I can no longer treat you like a child.
But still, he looks so calm and cute when he's asleep... I wonder what kind of dream he's having.
I don't know, but we should let him sleep in peace. Natsuhiko didn't just wear down his mind. His body's all worn out too.
That's true... Rest well, Hikorin.

--And with those words, silence filled the helicopter. Soon enough, sleeping breaths could be heard here and there throughout the cabin. The nine survivors finally fell into peaceful sleep...

My information energy is gradually dissipating. I can still observe, but intervention is becoming impossible. This will most likely be my last opportunity to come in contact with their feelings and desires. Which is why now is the time-- --to go through their memories once more. Doing so probably won't change anything, but it should help me gain a better understanding of them. As soon as I think that, my BC particles affect their brains-- And the fragments of the nine survivors' memories quietly float before me.

♪ BGM: LABO Security Lv. 3

And thus, we are dropped into the Xtend Episode menu, from which we can select the chapters we want to view. Selecting ''???'' will replay the chapter we just saw.

Selecting one of our main characters drops us into a RAM menu, where we can select different chapters. Now, some of these are retreads of chapters we saw during the regular game, as evidenced here with ''Defragment'', which we saw when going through Ukita's memories during Route Double. In going through the Xtend Episode, I will only make a short reference to the chapters we'll be skipping as duplicates, as you've already seen these, and we're here for the new poo poo.

Now, the chapters marked with the key icon are special. These have Senses inputs, and we need to find the correct input to unlock further scenes. In this part, Answer Mode is already unlocked, so it should be impossible not to get the right answer within two tries. At the end of one of the unlocked chapters for each character, we then unlock a Tip about the character as a summary of their personality.

We're going to be going through the characters in Enneagram order (which is also how they're ordered in the menu), with one exception. We will be doing Natsuhiko last, because his single unlockable scene is meant to be a closing scene for the entire game, so it only makes sense to go into it last. So with that, next time, we'll start with Ukita.
