CoolCab posted:initial reports will be wildly inaccurate and that's the nature of the 24 hour news cycle Not packed, no - my first thought when I heard the report was "Wow, that's like the stupidest place to do that". There'd be a fair few people but maybe a tenth as many as there would be on a weekday night and a twentieth of weekday rush hour. There'd be a lot more people around Borough Market, just down the road, and a huge amount more at Piccadilly or Trafalgar Square. The pavements at London Bridge are much wider than Westminster Bridge too, so there's an easier escape route. There are reports of casualties further afield than London Bridge though so I really don't know what to think.

Yeah how the gently caress are you going to be able to tell something's blood rather than any other liquid or just a weird shadow?

If you put bollards on a bridge then some oval office would just mow people down by the side of the road instead. If you put bollards by the side of a road then they'd plough through people crossing Oxford Street or whatever. It's not really something that can be fixed.

forkboy84 posted:A pretty smart choice. I stuck on the BBC News Channel & it's just..."We know something big & important has happened but we have no details so here's some tweets". Rolling news is bad but it's also the sort of thing you can't imagine ever being turned back. I was gonna mock how "we know it was them refugees" was gonna pop up, but it did before I managed to do so.

It's weird how desensitised you get. I have been to London Bridge many times and know a lot of people that work in that area of London, I've drank in the pub that is in that shot and will currently have 50 police cars outside it. But when the news alert came through my reaction was "another one? ffs" and then just carried on with what I was doing.

Prince John posted:Caution: this may raise blood pressure. A textbook illustration of earlier comments in this thread on the Economist: Mate, if you think that's loving stupid, have this belter from The Independent. John Rentoul at his finest, whining about the evils of universal benefits and how putting up corporation tax just means increased costs for customers & claiming if you want to protect the incomes of the poor you should vote Lib Dem. "All good socialists should vote Lib Dem on Thursday." The last line of that article. I'm sorry if anyone thinks this is poor taste, but there's just nothing to say about whatever horrible poo poo has gone down in London, & I needed a laugh.

Now I think about it that account of Southwark Bridge sounds very fishy now - that and Tower Bridge is where they'd have diverted the traffic heading for London Bridge and if nothing lese we'd have heard it had been closed if there had been an incident there.

I'm kind of wondering if the polling might be inaccurate in the other direction, if there's now "shy labour" people who won't admit they're voting for jam stalin, clearly the joke option. It's almost certainly not the case given it's been the opposite almost forever, but, then, we've never had jam stalin before either.
