There's not going to be much more coming out about this incident until the early hours of the morning, so I suppose we may as well discuss the normal stuff.

"Shy voter" is synonymous with "ashamed that they're actual selfish voter", basically. They're shy because they don't want to admit that actually, they want to keep their money and not pay as much tax, someone else should really be paying instead. They don't really want to have to have their lives interrupted by strikes, they should be able to get to work on time. They're a bit afraid of all the muslims and would like to see less of them around, even though you shouldn't say that because people will think you're a racist.

It's not about being cool or credible, it's about voting for something that you know is probably going to hurt people, but helps you, and they don't want to admit that they are that person deep down. No one voting for Corbyn is reluctant to admit they voted for him. So I don't think you can really have "shy Corbynites" just by nature.

Broadly I agree but I suppose if you were looking for rays of hope maybe some people feel embarrassed about voting for a former member of the IRA as PM. Obviously I'm being silly & hyperbolic, but that would probably be the issue if anything was going to make "shy Corbynites" a thing. But I don't think it is a thing.

On top of that, you'd imagine May will be a lot happier to continue a foreign policy in the Middle East which has done a lot to destabilise the issue, which has also contributed to the radicalisation of some people.

Considering that a lot of the attackers appear to be operating entirely independently and just claim allegiance to ISIS I don't really know if it's ISIS's command structure trying to influence the election as much as the election may be making a bunch of pre-existing radicals crawl out of the woodwork.

It's all just nihilstic killing. With the IRA bombings, the demand was for a fully independent Ireland, and there was an understandable if completely unjustifable goal. What exactly is the point of killing for the ISIS perspective? How do you even stop purely random, nonsensical violence?

3 incidents now apparently.

ISIS believes in an actual apocalypse, and their primary tactic outside the Middle East is for just random losers to go crazy and do some random crime, trying to read too much into their tactics seems kinda fruitless

That previous polls were wrong due to "shy Tories" was the idea proffered in the immediate wake of the last election, but the subsequent inquiry into polling methodology found that it wasn't a real factor. The problem was just that the polls were poo poo.

The report said this about it specifically:

quote:

We found weak evidence that there may have been a very modest late swing to the Conservatives between the final polls and Election Day, although this can have contributed – at most – around one percentage point to the mean absolute error on the Conservative lead. The widely held view that the polling miss was due to deliberate misreporting - ‘shy Tories’ telling pollsters they intended to vote for other parties - is difficult to reconcile with the results of the re-contact surveys carried out by the pollsters and with the two random surveys undertaken after the election. We reject deliberate misreporting as a contributory factor in the polling miss.

ISIS's stated goal is to force an apocalyptic showdown with the west in, IIRC, Raqqah, so, yes. Corbyn would be trying to de-escalate things, they want the rapture.

I dunno, I've met them so far. There are people who'd really invested themselves in the idea that Corbyn's hopeless and inept and could only deliver multiple crushing defeats to Labour and nothing can ever improve until he goes, and so on, and these people are reluctant to say he actually seems to be doing well.
