Corbyn is going to give a speech tonight apparently.

Presumably why Labour agreed to suspend campaignig until 'this evening' while the Tories have said 'until tomorrow', to give Theresa May's campaign speech from the steps of number 10 more time to go down unopposed.

Personally I hope Corbyn doubles down on his earlier points that draconian laws and lengtheir prison sentences are useless at combating this form of attack, and calls Theresa May out on her nonsense 'enough is enough' rhetoric. Promising a total revamp of Prevent would also be a good start.

A bunch of bourgie economists just signed a public letter in support of the Labour manifesto.

quote:

On 8 June, voters will go to the polls for perhaps the most important UK general election since 1945. The importance arises in great part from profound differences in economic policy, reflecting different views of the nature and health of the British economy.

The Conservative manifesto calls for continued austerity, which will tend to slow the economy at a crucial juncture, against the backdrop of Brexit negotiations. Their spending cuts have hurt the most vulnerable and failed to achieve their intended debt and deficit reduction targets.

In contrast, Labour’s manifesto proposals are much better designed to strengthen and develop the economy and ensure that its benefits are more fairly shared and sustainable, as well as being fiscally responsible and based on sound estimations.

We point to the proposed increases in investment in the future of the UK and its people, labour market policies geared to decrease inequality and to protect the lower paid and those in insecure work and fair and progressive changes in taxation.

IDS on World at One suggesting that when May was talking new laws she meant revising TPIMs to be more like the old control orders.

How the gently caress is this suspension of campaigning in any way?

gently caress knows, more empty symbolism from Tory HQ and hope that'll get some Labour canvassers to not do anything today? I know it's caused some Bristol ones to be cancelled.

This is good because it's given them a chance to get in on the headlines tomorrow which otherwise would all be about Mays speech and this way Corbyn at least gets a rebuttal.

I actually respect UKIPs stance. They said they won't stop campaigning, and they haven't.

The difference with the Tories is that they declared a halt on campaigning until tomorrow and then May made a loving campaign speech complete with new policy announcements from the podium of Prime Minister.

I think it is acceptable for parties to continue campaigning if they are open about what they are doing.

I do not think it is acceptable to agree to a suspension of campaigns, and then use a PM announcement (and TV interviews, etc) to talk about policies you would implement if you were to win the election while claiming that you aren't campaigning.

the difference being that UKIP are saying they're still campaigning and tbh have a good reason to do so. May has said she's suspending campaigning but is announcing policy proposals directly related to the incident that caused the suspension of campaigning. UKIP are being honest and open with what they're doing, Tories aren't.

i think we've all figured out by now that the Tories think "campaigning" means "staying indoors and not talking to anyone with a camera under any circumstances", so now that campaigning has been suspended they're free to do the opposite, their behaviour makes perfect sense

new John Pilger piece:

The unsayable in Britain’s general election campaign is this. The causes of the Manchester atrocity, in which 22 mostly young people were murdered by a jihadist, are being suppressed to protect the secrets of British foreign policy.

Critical questions – such as why the security service MI5 maintained terrorist “assets” in Manchester and why the government did not warn the public of the threat in their midst – remain unanswered, deflected by the promise of an internal “review”.

The alleged suicide bomber, Salman Abedi, was part of an extremist group, the Libyan Islamic Fighting Group, that thrived in Manchester and was cultivated and used by MI5 for more than 20 years.

The LIFG is proscribed by Britain as a terrorist organisation which seeks a “hardline Islamic state” in Libya and “is part of the wider global Islamist extremist movement, as inspired by al-Qaida”.

The “smoking gun” is that when Theresa May was Home Secretary, LIFG jihadists were allowed to travel unhindered across Europe and encouraged to engage in “battle”: first to remove Mu’ammar Gadaffi in Libya, then to join al-Qaida affiliated groups in Syria.

Last year, the FBI reportedly placed Abedi on a “terrorist watch list” and warned MI5 that his group was looking for a “political target” in Britain. Why wasn’t he apprehended and the network around him prevented from planning and executing the atrocity on 22 May?

Seems to me Labour's best strategy now will be to bang the security drum tonight/tomorrow, then hammer their new pledge of trying to reduce VAT along with reeling off all their other popular policies for the rest of the week.

Don't know how much difference can be made. I gained a small amount of faith in the British public when Manchester didn't immediately result in a poll bounce for May/UKIP, I'm just hoping it doesn't get taken away again. I have a worrying suspicion the Tories are going to trot out Corbyn's mis-quoted comments about shoot to kill in the next few days.
