I have no idea. It's just funny that the other side of that coin was firebombing German cities, so it isn't a very good example of a calm and collected measured response.

There were 2,868,691 more votes for Clinton than for Trump, but the election came down to where 83,940 of them lived.

You wouldn't think Michigan would be big on Republicans because they're currently dog loving the poo poo out of everyone there, but then we did have a decade of Granholm before who inherited the growing shitstorm of fail from Engler and had to fight a Republican government, so everyone's minds are probably thinking "That fuckup dem slut"

How do I explain to people that "but the stock market is up!!!" actually doesn't mean poo poo when they use it as a rebuttal to every possible economic concern.
The stock market is the trading of equities, meaning that it roughly reflects the market value of companies. It would be like saying the economy of an apartment complex is doing well because it's property value rose, even though all the residents still work poo poo jobs and won't see any benefit from this. It comes down to understanding what the stock market represents, and even though it might correlate with economic boom busts, its more because during good times people invest and in bad times people move their money to safer investments like bonds. It's more of a symptom than a cause.

You'd have to pay me like twice my hypothetical Seattle salary to get me to even consider wanting to move to Atlanta, and no I don't care that "cost of living in Atlanta is less than Seattle." If I'm earning say 80k in Seattle then I'd need an offer of 160k in Atlanta to move there because you're kind of asking me for a lot and engineers are still in a position where we get to choose and be picky.

Funny thing is my father is a civil engineer for AECOM that worked Hartsfeild for the last 13 years and just lost the rebid part because senior engineers have too high of salaries. You know where the company sends him so his current salary was in line with the local market? San Fransico International.

I think they've been calling it a travel ban for a while now. Anyway, it's obvious that it's a ban on people from those seven countries - the court cases are based on it being religious discrimination.

I had a lot of friends go to Georgia Tech from Northeast liberal bastions and they all uniformly hated it. Two are 30 years old and living with their parents just to stay in expensive blue cities.

Personally, I thought it was bad because of the weather and its public transportation is cancer. The downtown area had a depressing 70s architecture feel and when I was shown the "nice part" by locals it was a boulevard with no sidewalks and mostly upscale astroturfed restaurants and high end stores. That, and suburbs, acres and acres of suburbs.

Personally, small-town wise I have enjoyed my time in Pittsburg, hell Philly isn't too bad either. A lot of charming small towns in the mountain west too. Butte, Flagstaff, etc. At least there if you have a car commute times are very short.

Austin was nice too, but trash public transportation. Heard good things about San Antonio too.

But Atlanta is everything wrong with Sun Belt urban planning (like Houston or Dallas).

I'm from Alaska and I lived in Atlanta during both major snows. That half an inch of snow turned into almost an inch of ice the instant it hit the road. This is around noon, in a city with almost no flat roads, no equipment (because it had never been needed before), and where no cars (or car shops) carried chains or studs. The hills made it literally impossible to drive and extremely dangerous to even walk. It was by far the worst road conditions I've ever seen, and the only thing that could have prevented it would have been heavy pre-snow salting (and gently caress salt) and/or if everyone had chains, both of which are now available.

Atlanta's a great city - it's on my short list for the next time we're looking for positions.

E: You definitely need to know the right areas to be at night, but that's every city. Public transportation and walk ability needs major upgrades, but the bike paths that have been built and slowly connected are very nice.

It's commute is definitely one of the worst. When I lived there it was over an hour drive to work. The only one worse I have experienced is the D.C. commute.
