Corbyn is going to give a speech tonight apparently. Presumably why Labour agreed to suspend campaignig until 'this evening' while the Tories have said 'until tomorrow', to give Theresa May's campaign speech from the steps of number 10 more time to go down unopposed. Personally I hope Corbyn doubles down on his earlier points that draconian laws and lengtheir prison sentences are useless at combating this form of attack, and calls Theresa May out on her nonsense 'enough is enough' rhetoric. Promising a total revamp of Prevent would also be a good start.

A bunch of bourgie economists just signed a public letter in support of the Labour manifesto.quote:On 8 June, voters will go to the polls for perhaps the most important UK general election since 1945. The importance arises in great part from profound differences in economic policy, reflecting different views of the nature and health of the British economy.

I know it's caused some Bristol ones to be cancelled. jabby posted:Corbyn is going to give a speech tonight apparently. This is good because it's given them a chance to get in on the headlines tomorrow which otherwise would all be about Mays speech and this way Corbyn at least gets a rebuttal.

May has said she's suspending campaigning but is announcing policy proposals directly related to the incident that caused the suspension of campaigning. i think we've all figured out by now that the Tories think "campaigning" means "staying indoors and not talking to anyone with a camera under any circumstances", so now that campaigning has been suspended they're free to do the opposite, their behaviour makes perfect sense

new John Pilger piece: The unsayable in Britain’s general election campaign is this. The causes of the Manchester atrocity, in which 22 mostly young people were murdered by a jihadist, are being suppressed to protect the secrets of British foreign policy. Critical questions – such as why the security service MI5 maintained terrorist “assets” in Manchester and why the government did not warn the public of the threat in their midst – remain unanswered, deflected by the promise of an internal “review”. The alleged suicide bomber, Salman Abedi, was part of an extremist group, the Libyan Islamic Fighting Group, that thrived in Manchester and was cultivated and used by MI5 for more than 20 years. The LIFG is proscribed by Britain as a terrorist organisation which seeks a “hardline Islamic state” in Libya and “is part of the wider global Islamist extremist movement, as inspired by al-Qaida”. The “smoking gun” is that when Theresa May was Home Secretary, LIFG jihadists were allowed to travel unhindered across Europe and encouraged to engage in “battle”: first to remove Mu’ammar Gadaffi in Libya, then to join al-Qaida affiliated groups in Syria. Last year, the FBI reportedly placed Abedi on a “terrorist watch list” and warned MI5 that his group was looking for a “political target” in Britain. Why wasn’t he apprehended and the network around him prevented from planning and executing the atrocity on 22 May? http://www.counterpunch.org/2017/05/31/terror-in-britain-what-did-the-prime-minister-know/

Seems to me Labour's best strategy now will be to bang the security drum tonight/tomorrow, then hammer their new pledge of trying to reduce VAT along with reeling off all their other popular policies for the rest of the week. Don't know how much difference can be made. I gained a small amount of faith in the British public when Manchester didn't immediately result in a poll bounce for May/UKIP, I'm just hoping it doesn't get taken away again. I have a worrying suspicion the Tories are going to trot out Corbyn's mis-quoted comments about shoot to kill in the next few days.
