I don't think he would resign unless it got so bad that every one of his close advisers were telling him he has to resign or he'll go to jail. Plus a bunch of CEOs calling him and telling him the same thing. It would be the best thing for the GOP, mid to long-term, for Trump to resign yesterday. The darkest timeline: President Pence serves through '20 and is boring but does a bunch of heinous poo poo because Republicans control all branches of government. He might even get another SCOTUS seat or two. Trump's nutjob fringe base radicalizes at the ouster of their God Emperor and gets more violent against immigrants and minorities and of course the Pence admin does nothing about it, possibly even encourages it. The Dems might make strong gains in '18 and take back the White House in '20, but what realistically do you think they would accomplish? The GOP has shown itself under Obama to be utterly shameless with obstruction, the Dems will need rock-solid control of Congress and the White House to actually fix things. A Dem president in '20 will help but it's not enough. The reality is the GOP stole a SCOTUS seat and has a good chance to pick up more, plus they have 2-4 years of total control of the government. We really need wave elections in '18 and '20 and while Pence is banal evil compared to Trump's lazy idiocy I don't think Pence would inspire as strong as a resistance as Trump not resigning and the scandals and outrage continuing to mount.

I think people are overlooking the fact that if some seats are lost by the GOP in 18 or 20, those congressmen will still be on thin ice. They will not be able to enact any far left legislation without risking their seat, leaving us about where we are for a lot of bills that might in any way be controversial.

For one, the oral arguments in the Maslenjak case really, really don't bode well for Roberts' or Kennedy's willingness to let the administration gently caress around on immigration. For another, I'm still hoping Clarence Thomas writes a dissent in which he says that Chy Lung v Freeman was wrongly decided in 1876 and therefore all authority on immigration policy devolves to the individual states rather than the federal government. (also saying that Kennedy equals a Republican majority is dumb even if we file Roberts and Thomas as blindly partisan)

Yup, our best bet is Trump/Pence continues to be toxic to the GOP brand, they're so incompetent they don't pass significant legislation, the left gets more active, we have Dem wave elections in '18 and/or '20. We're not going to get socialism but we definitely need a New New Deal, education and immigration reform, action on climate change etc and you need better than weak Dem control to do all that. We can't afford another Obama, that's just treading water.
