goddamnedtwisto posted:UK air traffic control is outsourced, of course. Reagan fired every ATC worker that was involved in the strike; sending thousands of them into poverty (as it was one of a couple jobs in the '80s allowing non-college grads to make a really decent wage). Striking workers were blackballed from the industry until Clinton took office and it was really about 15 years before the industry managed to recover. In '05/06 the new workers union got completely hosed by the FAA with pay cuts and wage freezes; then the labor board that dealt with suits dismissed it outright (because the head was a Bush administration employee). Staffing levels a result are lower than they were during the Reagan administration (10k last time I looked) so you end up with huge delays. He didn't take it private, but he completely destroyed the union (PATCO) that was involved with the strike. They ended up having to use military air traffic controllers as scabs after crashes right after he fired them. Party Plane Jones fucked around with this message at 22:08 on Jun 4, 2017 |

I guess we'll see in the morning, but what else, at four days out from an election, can you do? he'll get slaughtered for it but the public largely agree with what he's said. The fact he's just backing what the police are saying will make a difference to the readers of the tabloids, if not their editors. If it goes down poorly then it's not going to cost him an election. As you say, we're three days out, and a potential world leader absolutely should be condemning that sort of shite if he's not really got much to lose.

It's a really calming influence I'll say that but people are still going to want answers and to hear some sort of message about how things will get better. While Tories and Labour are both saying more interference from the police and intelligence services is what's needed I think Corbyns generally taking a positive angle about improving how we deal with others (although obviously these new coppers will be just as poo poo to minorities and lefties as the old ones so it's not a win there) while May is just wanting to put the boot in and that doesn't fit with the mood of solidarity from the concert and indeed much of the public response.

If it was symbolic of a major sense of calm and solidarity by the British people to everyone then a major speech by a politician attacking another politician could be offputting. Regarde Aduck posted:Yeah the acab thing of hating all police all the time is dogmatic. They're an unfortunate requirement of society. Individual cops can and do rescue cats from trees and risk their lives to stop terrorists, but the police apparatus is deeply repressive - in just the last year or two we've seen examples of them spying on elected politicians and infiltrating left wing progressive political groups among other equal heinous poo poo. Cops can be good people, but all cops are bastards. There's nuance there, and nuance is okay. Do not be afraid of complicated answers.
