I've stopped getting anti-Corbyn attack ads on Youtube: the only ones I'm getting now are all about Abbott:

"Imagine her as Home Secretary! She can't do maths, loves Al-Qaeda and hates white people, etc!"

Wonder if this is because the anti-Corbyn attacks weren't having the impact they wanted

hot take time: even in the context of norn iron it was really idiotic for the Leader of the Labour Party to criticise shoot-to-kill, or support shoot-to-kill, or take any stance on shoot-to-kill; the only correct answer is to evade the question and yammer on instead on one's righteous belief in the rule of law (are british vawwues) and the right of all british people to due process in a court of law, which should quite suffice as a wink to your supporters on your stance without giving any bullshit soundbites in an answer to what is by construction a bullshit question.

that come back to haunt you six months later in a way that is entirely foreseeable

you know, and the interviewer knows, that britain has in fact certain obligations on the use of lethal force under the ECHR anyway; you know, and the interviewer knows, that the british people at large don't give a gently caress and want the terrorists dead. there is nothing to be gained in taking the bait. you are not a backbencher any more shut up shut up shut uppppp

Every hot take you have about Corbyn seems to boil down to "This principled man who's always stood for what he believed in and been honest about it should flip-flop on what he believes in and lie about it". Its a bold strategy, but I dont see it winning many votes.

dredging this up again. also therat's fair criticism. that i disagree with, but still fair.

i want to make this point: it is not dishonest to endorse policies mainly in their best, most sympathetic circumstances rather than the weird counterintuitions that pass the most muster at conference blackboard. people are innumerate; people support contradictory things all at once. Democracy merely limits governments from straying into space of overwhelmingly rejected combinations of policies, but anything within that space is determined by things far less highbrow than Justice and Fairness.

like, say, your ability to eat a bacon sarnie with grace. this is the level of dignity here. let's not give that ballot box too much credit.

if we oppose shoot-to-kill, it is (I hope) not because the people being shot and killed were mainly northern irish terrorists who we actually secretly wish would win by terror, but because we believe that people have a right to be arrested and tried for their crimes, not summarily executed in a quiet carpark. And to sell this high principle, which is popular, and let people draw their own conclusions (if they bother) which they actually resent, is about as decent and honest as sensible campaigning gets.

Corbyn's approval rating, and like's/dislikes are now genuinely good and better than May's, to the point where additional attack ads against him aren't likely to actually have any effect.

Abbot's by comparison are really bad. She's now probably the biggest point of weakness for the campaign.

She was asked to respond to Trump's comments (prior to the latest one) on Khan and she said "I think Sadiq Khan is doing a good job, I don't think anyone can disagree with that." and then repeated the line when asked. Then someone asked "What does Donald Trump have to do to make you criticise him? How far does he have to go?" and she just said she has told him that she disagreed with him pulling out of the climate accord, which led to frustrated calls from journalists and her laughing and picking a new question.

i suspect that corbyn's Thing here is mainly that he's been in a position to play to a very limited audience for most of his career, and that a move like saying 'i oppose shoot-to-kill' would, for almost all his life, only reach people who understand what it meant to some extent
as leader of the opposition, though, his words get picked up by the tabloids, and for the longest time he found it difficult to adjust

what's good politics as a member of the awkward squad and what's good politics as leader are different things, and I do suspect Corbyn not to be calculated enough to appreciate that by himself

the problem is this is a really solid example of what Ronya's talking about here. It is not news to anyone who has studied history that the british, and white people, are fundamentally scum. It's pretty true of all humans, but the british (and whitey) have done really well out of it. But a large, irate, number of voters think that saying mean things is the beginning and end of racism, and genuinely believe that now there are no problems except people blaming white people for things that aren't there.

Dragging the debate upwards (or reforming education) is going to provide better odds at achieving your goal than telling white people something they don't want to hear if you still let them vote afterwards. And Abbott is much, much weaker than Corbyn when put on the spot.
