I agree. I'm just saying they are consistent, since that was what was under dispute earlier.

Apparently there were threats of some kind and Evergreen was evacuated:

quote:

The liberal school’s campus is located off Evergreen Parkway in Olympia. Evergreen posted the following on its website: “In response to a direct threat to campus safety, the college is closing immediately for the day. All are asked to leave campus or return to residence halls for instructions.”

quote:

"I'm on my way to Evergreen University now with a .44 Magnum. I'm going to execute as many people on that campus as I can get a hold of. You have that? What's going on here? You communist, scumbag town? I'm going to murder as many people on that campus as I can. Just keep your eyes open you scumbag."

Apparently it was a phone call.

A human being that was given to fly

So I just got an email from Nikkita Oliver's campaign saying the the Green Party and ISO endorsed her. Can anyone confirm those? More interested in the ISO endorsement.

Along those lines, I think the DSA has already voted to endorse a candidate for mayor. Anyone heard anything on that front?

But the council shifted the emphasis more toward healthy-eating programs and said the tax would raise an estimated $15 million per year.

Some money will support the city’s Fresh Bucks program, which helps people using food stamps buy more fruits and vegetables at farmers markets.

And the council approved an amendment offered by Councilmember Debora Juarez calling out food banks and soup kitchens as programs eligible to receive funds.

“Funds raised by the tax will put healthy food on the table for hungry families across our city,” said Tanika Thompson, a food-access organizer for the South Seattle community organization Got Green.

I'm okay with it, as it not only encourages healthy eating, but the money goes directly back into providing food for the poor. It should also tax Starbucks and diet soda for fairness though.

I'm not especially fond of the fact that it's a regressive tax, but I suppose it's not so different from any other vice tax in that regard. Seconding the Starbucks drinks, but imagine that passing in this city.

I mean, if we really wanted to cut to the core, we'd eliminate subsidies for sugar and corn. But then, I suppose that's not a matter of municipal taxation.

I also hate regressive taxes, I almost voted against the latest Sound Transit proposal because of how regressively it was funded. But at least this sin tax doesn't go into the general fund, and instead provides food to the poorest people in Seattle.

That doesn't seem stupid and convoluted to you? And the actual plans for the money isn't just that Fresh Bucks program; maybe you'd like to see where that money goes.

It's fine if you don't want to take my word for it, but the extent of the Portland Branch's collaboration was having a police liason negotiate with them in advance about what we were trying to do in the stage space.

Uh... its a link to the bill. I already read the bill.
Its not a perfect bill, but it doesn't directly gently caress the poor, its just a sin tax(bad) with the revenue stream going to a decent cause. Namely, matching funds for using EBT at farmer's markets and food banks.

Edit: I know it isn't full communism now, but lets try to help people first.
Edit2: Oh, I see your confusion. The original version of the bill had the mayor propose other funding usage, but that was struck from the bill.

If you wanted to encourage healthier diets you'd be better served by restricting portion sizes and issuing tax penalties to businesses that opt not to use a recommended range of portion sizes.

It's been fairly well demonstrated that simply having less food in front of you will mean you feel full faster and eat less, even if you have the ability to get infinite refills. But IIRC New York tried this and people shat themselves so welp

I think at this point we have to move forward and push as hard as we can for a good income tax in the city.

I have heard the Transit Riders Union is pushing for a 1% tax on everything over $200,000 or $250,000. Which is pretty good.

Tim Burgess heard about the pretty good idea and of course is working to push his idea, which is a 1% flat tax. Seriously, I can't wait for that fucker to be gone.

I'm down with legal, codified fat shaming, but then we need to be consistent with applying it to every junk food and fat food company's products. Which would probably destroy a good chunk of the economy and also not work.

Is it because of the milk? I know that's why a lot of the prepackaged Starbucks drinks don't get sales taxed while other prepackaged sweetened drinks do.

Wait, did city council spend hours debating if the WOW "snow" drinks are taxed or not? Their slush is ice based, but the snow is milk based. We better carve out Starbucks exemptions a bit better! It isn't taxed if it is milk and coffee based!
