ThomasPaine posted:I actually think that Brexit with a Labour government could potentially be the best possible timeline. They would probably negotiate a better deal than the Tories and we'd be less hostile to Europe in the coming years as a result. Labour could avoid major criticism on it because they were 'just doing the best they could with the mess the Tories made' and actually being out of the EU opens a lot more options with regards renationalisation and other left-wing policies that would have been made very difficult by Brussels. I'm thinking it might be a pretty bad timeline, especially when you consider that Labour's majority (if any) would presumably be less than 10. Corbyn would have no real authority, and would be completely hamstrung by the hardcore shits in the party who still wouldn't allow him to implement the best bits of his platform. With a weak domestic position, he has a weak negotiating position to take to Europe. I don't think Labour will be able to pull off spinning a bad Brexit due to the "mess the Tories made" because the average Brexiteer seems to think good job = posturing and hardline tactics to show the Europeans whose in charge. They'll have no problem blaming his inability to 'stand up to Brussels' for any problem. A Labour-led confidence and supply agreement strikes me as very bad, since he would be stopped from implementing key policies and it's hard to see how a stable consensus on Brexit negotiating could be reached between Labour and the SNP. Brexit really has an impact on our ability to bumble along without a proper government. I see too many long-term downsides in tarnishing the brand of the Left for this to be a desirable one. A timeline where the Conservatives end up at the mercy of confidence and supply might be the best mid-term option, since it'll completely hamstring them from doing any stupid poo poo, give the opposition the ability to veto new proposals that are regressive and largely 'freeze' the political situation to where we are now. It will be the Conservatives who take the reputational damage from bumbling along unable to deliver on their manifesto.

My guess is that the Tories will eke out a slightly wider majority. It's fun to imagine the alternatives, though. What would LD or the SNP demand from a minority Labour government?

julian assflange posted:Are there exit polls tomorrow? They are seen as pretty accurate (much more so than other polls). The last few (four I think), have correctly predicted the outcome (i.e. who gets majority, or hung parliament), although have been slightly off on the actual numbers. 2015 was interesting as all the polls in the lead-up suggested a hung parliament was the only possibility, so when the exit polls came out saying Tory majority everyone assumed the exit polls had hosed up somehow - so much so that Paddy Ashdown (ex Lib Dem leader) said he'd eat his hat on TV if it actually was a Tory majority. He ended up eating a cake in the shape of a hat a few weeks later.
