what's even more hilarious is that all of these can now be found for $30 at boutique-ish chinese sites like k3kc and probably a buck shipped somewhere on taobao that eighty bucks spacebar at least has the merit of being an original design that's about 65 caps including 50+ of literally the same thing but in different colors, probably ranging from $40 per to something three figgie each. that's at the bare minimum 2k worth of nerd bait, probably much more

i see what they were trying to do, but they didn't use a period correct keeb. like at all. it's a 2005-2008 g80 something. had they gone for something older (or at least without blue leds, gently caress) it would've come out less bad dump them on a 1980s g80 and it starts to make sense: (pictured with a honeywell round 5 set) the honeywell btrm (on which round 5s and this colorway of maxkeys are based on) was a mostly beige keeb: my maxkeys are in, i'll post some pics after i'm done playing with them

alrighty, here we go tl;dr these are good and you should consider both maxkey's product and zfrontier's retail channel for your next idiot nerd purchase. in my case i joined a group order with a ~4 month cycle, however i believe that some of the more common colorways are kept stock, albeit on taobao (essentially alibaba but with gently caress all english or out of china purchase support) first things first, some housekeeping: i remembered wrong when i said this set was $91cad/$68usd, it's actually $91usd shipped. note that the $16.80 shipping cost is the only one available for the couple addresses i tried (mine + a few us ones). they will ship for free if you buy more than $100 worth of stuff. again, i feel i need to stress that they shipped the set overnight, which , but at least it's not adding 4-6 weeks to the group order process my experience with zfrontier has been pretty good, especially for a chinese retailer; decent enough comms in proper english, tracking number that works, paypal support. waybill is straight up fraudulent, per china standard, claiming contents with no commercial value (ncv). i don't like this, but heh with the caveat that i'm not at all setup for macro photography, have a few shots! plain brown box with a tiny qr sticker on the side. card is good stock and the inner baffles hold everything in place very well during transport. box contains 2 two part plastic trays with a thin foam insert. like pram said, the packaging is extremely good and i'll be keeping it in case i need to store another set of keys or something. actual important stuff, beautiful double shot honeywell caps with crisp legends. i really want to emphasize that proper qc went into this; the manufacturing process involved in doubleshot caps is hella sketchy at small scale and i was expecting some issues. no alignment, flashing, overmolding or whatever issues as far as i can tell. important to note: the set i bought came with a fair amount of redundant keys in different sizes. always make sure that the poo poo you're buying will actually fit your keeb, especially if you're rocking a special snowflake layout. google "[keyboard model] keycap sizes" or ask around. in my case, my code/wasd is rocking a standard ansi layout. legend insert is properly level with the cap bodies, and a subtle texture is present on top (vs a polished side finish). hard to tell without a scale, but because of the added material in the fab process, key weight is around the same of pbt caps double shot process is proper and legit looks identical to signature plastic's, which for me confirms that these are made with the tooling comptec (sp's france branch) surplused when it went bankrupt. everything is double shot except for the spacebars (obviously). speaking of those, the set includes both a 6.25u and 7.25u bar important to note: these are still abs caps, so they'll eventually develop some shine, but if you can be arsed to you can re-etch the surface since the legends aren't printed. i personally don't mind the shine, and i might even refinish & polish the set at some point. redundant keys come in enough different sizes to cover most use cases. lower controls come in 1.25u and 1.5u, you have a set of 1.75u, 2.25u & 3u shifts, and the choice between flat or sculpted capslock keys, among others. kinda lovely to show off of a keeb, but the sculpt is the same as correct sp sa. left/red being the top row esc key and going down the layout towards the right, we're looking at r1 r1 r2 r3 r4 r3. to quote pram again, quite tall and luxurious. legends are clean and crisp in two weights and a couple sizes of gorton modified. rumor has it that the original maxkey run had the same kerning issues as old sp runs ( shif t ), lending more credibility that these are made on old comptec/sp tooling. the issue isn't present on this set, so if it was a thing they fixed it. colors seem to mirror a possible 7bit round 5 configuration. i don't have a sp color ring or round 5 keys to compare, but assuming they match more or less, we're looking at white (wfk), red (ras) & medium grey (gpa). one minor aesthetics issue when comparing this set to round 5 or the btrm it's based on is the total lack of black. white keys have grey legends instead of black ones, although it still looks pretty good imho. this seems to be standard operation for maxkey, for example the original run had pink or cyan on white mains with white on pink or cyan modifiers. the do produce a white mains on black mods set so i might grab one down the line all in all this purchase is pretty needs suiting, especially since i was so desperate to get a nice round 5 set that i was cognitive dissonancing myself into considering spending $500+ for a set off of r/mechmarket i hope we'll start seeing more of maxkey, the whole sa monopoly thing with massdrop & sp. pros: - hella cheap in the context of an sa set - fully sculpted - faster turnaround than a lot of group orders, both in fabrication and shipping time - good qc, good packaging (might be zfrontier specific, ymmv) - good amount of spare keys in different sizes (to the best of my knowledge maxkey standard) cons: - white keys in gpa/wfk instead of nn/wfk - lack of "super" & "meta" legends, using "win" & "menu" instead - arrows keys look weird & fat imho, would've gone for text personally or at least a not-a-triangle arrow

since i've been cheating on you guys with the grey thread, if you aren't following that one, here's a couple things of interest i thought i'd merge in here building an ergodox (not the massdrop one, the open sores reference design) from scratch: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLBgJd5LCeXxmNQJnwcQyFuCwz3gV_oShV http://shop.profetkeyboards.com/product/ergodox-pcbs https://www.ergodox.io/ (the videos aren't mine, i just made the playlist) if you want to go down the ergodox route and are diy inclined, you can save a few buck and build it to your exact spergy reqs. it's obviously super loving labour intensive, but the nerd cred and bragging rights of showing up to the office with a thing you built from scratch is considerable. a neat, actually functional project if you want to learn this stuff instead of the usual make-light-go-blink-with-an-arduino-and-a-breadboard crap

not quite sure how it took canada post a weeks to move a box from mississauga to near montreal, and still gently caress it up enough to 1) not even try to deliver, 2) not leave a pick up card, 3) stage the package 2 towns over despite the perfectly fine post office less than a kilometer from my home, but hey, keyboard is here! too brokebrain'ed to sperg at lenght today so check out what's in the box of a capsless wasd w/ clears and what it looks like once you dress it up: keyboard: good, clicky and heavy usb->mini usb cable: does it thing usb->ps/2 adapter: iirc required for nkro, using it regardless because gently caress yeah ps/2 lube: lubes stabilizers: just enough to populate the keeb, they seem ok but a spare or two would've been nice cap puller: unexpected, not the greatest, good enough bonus "don't gently caress this up" warning:

also usb can do nkro, but that's dependent on a few things both on the kb & bios sides, and more often than not it gets capped to 6kro. the code/wasd for example can only do 6kro over usb. on the other hand, ps/2 has nkro as a default feature. now the better argument is do you really need nkro over 6kro, but i got the port and something to shove in it so that's what i'm doing
