hansen/sodo arena that pretty much puts the nail in the coffin. We'll see how this plays out but I'm still totally skeptical the city council won't gum this up especially with how dirty everyone in this has played. This loving mayor man.... Yeeesh E: at least I can ride my bike to key arena. I could still get into sodo quicker despite key being down the hill Duke Chin fucked around with this message at 22:17 on Jun 7, 2017 |

No kidding. Of course, if the SODO-supporting council members put the OVG proposal through the wringer, delay consideration til after the election...well, who knows then? Although I will say that this is the most concrete NHL ownership group we've seen. Hansen really hasn't focused enough on the league that clearly wants to expand to Seattle, I think. poo poo, this could actually happen. But then we're looking at either waiting til the Key is renovated (could be like five years) or wondering where the hell the expansion team plays. There's no available arena large enough for a team to stay in the interim, since the Key was the backup for a SODO arena. No available arena, that is, except... SAFECO FIELD That's right, that's my wild card proposal, 420 winter classic e'ery day let's fuckin do it woo

But really, the sticking point seems to be that the city is set to host NCAA basketball tournament games in 2019, so no Key arena renovations till then. I think rules based on host team means they couldn't move to HecEd, but it would make more sense to swap with a location in the northwest in 2020 or 2021 but supposedly the NCAA doesnt like that.

I think, for me, the worst part is that The Blethen family won. The Seattle Times won. The Port of Seattle won. The Mariners won. Mayor Babymouth gets his loving legacy pet project. Sally Bagshaw won. By transitive properties Kshama Sawant won. Literally everyone else in this area hates this loving project except for the above people. This isn't hyperbole - they all colluded and played a MASSIVE disinformation campaign and, in the case of the city, flat out ignored their constituency and their concerns. ~~~ The Darkest Timeline ~~~ rumbles on. I honestly don't trust these folks to A: get this thing shovel ready, or B: actually get/care about an NHL team here considering OVG has Livenation pulling in an equity share with this building. I won't be surprised if we get Kansas City'd with a music-only venue. Hopefully that DOESN'T happen and we get a team here (that isn't named something stupid like "steelhead" or <<<shudder>>> "golden knights") in the near future.

Kinda hoping somebody does something monumentally stupid and accidentally leaves a key guy off of the protect list. Also if Calgary leaves for a U.S. city I'm finding a new team.

The Seattle thing is gonna be garbo, but we already knew it was going to be garbo so there's no real surprise there. I'm just surprised someone found someone willing to pay to make the Key Arena vaguely serviceable. The NHL is desperate to be in Seattle so they'll jump at the chance to put a new expansion there; if the deal gets signed off on soon they'll probably move to sell the license before the next I'm still super curious as to what that will mean for Carolina, since Karmanos apparently wants out and no-one in Carolina wants to foot the bill. Say it with me now people: Calgary. Is. Going. To. Cave. And. Give. The. Flames. What. They. Want.

I also suspect he'd rather not have another Canadian team. Most likely expansion attempts involve U.S. cities, unless one counts Hamilton, which I don't because too many things would have to happen for that actually be a thing. I mean really, there aren't many more Canadian cities (maybe like 3-4) that could support an NHL team right now anyways. Halifax could do it based on the fact the Mooseheads are the only sports team they really have outside of Canadian university teams, but the time zone and travel factors could really hurt them when it comes to consideration. I'd be genuinely shocked if Saskatoon got a team. I know the Blues nearly ended up there, but if any Saskatchewan city gets a team I'd think it'll be Regina, even though it has less people, just because I think they get more money from the province due to the whole "provincial capital" thing. Plus you have Moose Jaw being close by, and that's another 34,000 people which nearly makes up the difference in population. I'd actually love it if there was a big Canadian expansion where one year it was Halifax and Regina/'Toon, and the next year, Quebec and Victoria. Or even Quebec and Seattle, that way you have an even 10 Canadian teams, plus a team that BC and Alberta residents can get to fairly easily.

I could see Halifax eventually getting a team. It's about 4 to 6 hours from anywhere else in the Maritimes and the next closest teams are Montreal and Boston. It only has around 300 000 people but people will drive there for the casino so I bet they'll do the same for an NHL game.

Funnily enough, Halifax would be more likely to get a team if Quebec did first I think. Because then you can have a division of Montreal, Toronto, Ottawa, Boston, Quebec, and Halifax. Travel would be fairly simple in that division! Sadly though, I think something would have to drastically change for Canada to get more teams. At the very least, that will be true as long as Gary Bettman's running the show. El Gallinero Gros fucked around with this message at 19:46 on Jun 8, 2017 |

I guess someone probably thinks the amount of NHL players Northwest Ontario has produced means we could make it work, but we have a pop of 106,000 and our main arena sits just under 4,700. Like Halifax is unlikely, but their pop is 403,000 and it sits a 10, 600. That could host an NHL team. Nissin Cup Nudist posted:Bettman hates QC because its 100% francophone This is also true. They were voted least attractive by a player's poll. Halifax might be able to avoid the ownership issues, and would give the maritimes their own team. They're also warmer. These things matter.
