cinci zoo sniper posted:WHAT THE gently caress i dunno if you are aware of this but americans cannot (commonly) buy 3kW electric kettles bc the common american electrical outlet only supplies 1.7kW (~117V * 15A) people in countries where the wall power is 220v usually still have 15A circuits and so their outlets can provide twice the power. i like to bring this up to the british exchange students we get every year when they take my electronics class. "have you noticed how slow american tea kettles are compared to what you're used to?" is a great introduction to power calculations

C.H.O.M.E posted:even if we did this dumb thing you are proposing and put two circuits and two heating elements in a kettle to be plugged into two outlets, you would probably have to extend one plug to another room. ~actually~ it could technically work if the kettle was designed correctly and your house's electrical system was laid out in the proper way. usually american homes bring power in at 220 and then split it into an upper and lower leg (-110v to ground, ground to +110v) for the two outlets on a wall panel. so you can turn a two-plug 110v outlet into a single-plug 220v one just by swapping a few wires inside. so theoretically you could have a kettle that plugs into both outlets and then combines the legs internally, becoming a 220v 15A device. so as you can see the american electrical system is clearly the superior design here, bc it allows you to use a lower, safer voltage on devices that can handle it (lmao @ 220v iphone chargers) while still giving you access to the full power on any outlet with just a screwdriver and some wire-nuts.

look at this hilarious loving thing that's because UK electricity needs a larger separation between the conductors for the higher voltage, and each plug must also have an internal fuse because of their incredibly dumb ring-main wiring that is marginally cheaper than the american system but also makes your house much more likely to burn down.
