Guavanaut posted:That's often the case for British degrees (unless they've started going all US style recently) outside of optional modules. But despite the lack of 'minors' they emphasize that studying something like philosophy, chemistry, humanities, or law will give you a skillset to better understand related things as a result of the methods or arguments or procedures that you learn. I wouldn't necessarily trust a chemist giving their opinion on climate change from a dataset, but I'd trust them more than a random youtuber. That is different. Any reason why those degrees are as laser-focused? Sounds like the STEM barbarians over there would be worse than what we get over her, which is almost mind-shattering. quote:I'd imagine that he probably got his GCSEs at 15/16 and then did something else instead of doing A-levels (17/18). Often that takes the form of getting a job while studying for some technical or vocational qualifications like BTECs or NVQs to advance. Or sitting on your rear end and doing internet rants. So it's more like he was on track to be a working class zero and got some basic GEDish qualification at 16 before failing in the actual labor market. It certainly explains his nativism, given that he has the standard "Took ur Jerbz" mentality of the entitled, low-education whites we also see in the US. I'm also interested in what happened to get him fully on wingnut welfare within the last six months or so. His patreon was at $1.6K at the start of December, then hit $2.5K in Feb, and is at $5.5K now. There hasn't been another GamerGate that I wasn't aware of, right? He's mostly a foreign commentor so I couldn't think it was a Trump thing.

Sounds like the STEM barbarians over there would be worse than what we get over her, which is almost mind-shattering. Apparently there are a number of British universities offering major/minor degrees now, but they seem to be the 'less serious' option compared to single honours degrees where you have one subject and some optional tangential modules like 'ethics and epistemology in science' or 'media law for artists'. A lot of the more traditional optional modules for academic subjects ware almost trade/vocational in nature, like 'glassblowing for chemists', although that's probably been replaced with more managerial style optionals or 'annoying the supply store when you break something for chemists'. It seems like a continuous winnowing process, where you do a wide spectrum of GCSEs (always at least English and Maths, without those is considered high school dropout equivalent, plus at least some humanities, arts, and/or sciences), if you then stay on to do A-levels you'd do three or four (or 5 I think, idk how the new system works) at more like AP/early college level, so the focusing down starts early. I'm not sure why it is like it is, but every time someone proposes a major shakeup it's usually terrible (hi Michael Gove, who surprisingly did English and not PPE). Engineers usually just become boilerplate conservatives or leftists, I don't think the techbro culture that creates "why not replace the government with technology!" exists as much in the UK outside of Bitcoin conferences. There is a certain type of scientist that gets given a podium and proceeds to be terrible, like Dawkins or Watson, but I think that's more "old white guy gets audience" than anything else.

Doing a single 'Intro to Whatever' course is only likely to reinforce the notion that you know everything you need to know about a given subject. With a focused degree you are at least aware of your total ignorance of anything outside your field (in most cases).

Wether Sargon is a high-school dropout or not is probably not that relevant given his pretty anti-intellectual audience, but his pompous high-horsing about "middle-class bourgeois elites" is rather hard to swallow from a man who, if his patreon income stays roughly constant between now and next April, will have a yearly income of ~50k or so. He is sitting comfortably between the top ninth and tenth percentiles of UK wage earners unless I'm mistaken. Very roughly of course, I don't know what fees Patreon charges, if he's got a working spouse, any children or if he has any other income sources (and also assuming his Patreon income remains relatively static until next April). He can be a high-school dropout for all I care, in fact it would explain a lot of his hostility to academia and anyone with a modicum of education in general, but his rank hypocrisy when he complains about elites and the like while he himself earns a very comfortable wage for being a British Alex Jones rankles me quite a bit. If I'd known this was the case (or if it had been the case) at the time of the Destiny debate, where he farted on about how Destiny was a privileged bourgeois, I'd have been screaming at the screen for Destiny to throw Sargon's own wealth back in his face.

I don't know if this class is just sub-Sarkeesian level basic or what, because they were unable to tell me anything about it except that they passed it and it proves feminism is dumb. Meanwhile where I did my degree in the UK, being forced to do a single essay on gender and history for the introductory historiography paper left a lot of people going "??? I really don't get this" because they were thrown in at the deep end with serious scholarly works on how gender identities were socially constructed in different time periods.

The actual answer there is most of the people complaining about X Studies classes in the US never had actually attended one. I've only had one class that could fit in that category (an honors class on Islam) was pretty non-offensive and covered some basic stuff about early history and thinkers in the Islamic world. A lot of the issue is the fairly standard "chuddy white guy gets angry that a class discusses things he's not comfortable with" you get in lots of places. Most of the 101 level stuff I've seen is about at the Sarkeesian level or a little higher (basic ideas, putting words to cultural phenomena we've all seen), but with a bit more actual academic rigor. So a course that develops basic points to hang later courses off of. Which is pretty much the way every academic field works, at least in the US.

It's common enough in the US. You see plenty of low-value whites complaining how it's unfair that they have to evenly compete with immigrant labor, and how they somehow deserve special Affirmative Action for being born in the US. The misogyny comes from them being bitter that women don't have sex with them because everyone call smell the stink of loser on them a mile away. The fact that they think they again should be given Affirmative Action to get to sleep with whatever unattainable beauty they desire doesn't help things either.

I guess that also doesn't really seem very socialist..? I mean to be honest I don't even know if Affirmative Action is what I'd call socialist, it's good, but it seems like a pretty specific solution to a problem and I'd probably say if anything it seems more like a liberal style solution. A socialist solution would be like, integrated unionization or something.
