Morrow posted:Sorry as an American, what's behind her current meltdown? In the past week, her father died, she stood in for the coward Theresa May at a debate and got smacked around, and now she's been unceremoniously dumped from not only her role as Home Secretary but Parliament itself. This is the worst week in her life to date, bar none.

Pershing posted:Another American here...two questions: Westminister handles both policy for the whole of the UK and things specific to England, e.g. the English National Health Service. In principle based on English Votes for English Laws (a policy introduced by the Conservatives in the last parliament), Scottish MPs are not supposed to get a vote on English matters. If the Tory majority relies of Scottish Tories, look up in your idiom dictionary "Hoised by one's own petard".

Morrow posted:Sorry as an American, what's behind her current meltdown? She's losing her seat (and job) by a presumably very thin margin and her dad died the day before Theresa "Calamity" May forced her to step in as surrogate in a TV debate that May chickened out of.

Pershing posted:Another American here...two questions: 1. only scottish mps can vote on laws specific to Scotland, which has responsibility for a lot of its own policy thanks to devolution. They can also vote on all proposals in Westminster, even things in areas devolved to Scotland. English (usually Tory because Scotland skews more to the left) mps feel that its unfair and unduly influences English law. Scottish mps argue (iirc) that as the largest nation in the UK our law has a knockdown effect on them and they have the right to vote. 2. Hard brexit and to ensure norn stays in the UK. They're pretty conservative anyway.
