Yeah this is the thing. A lot of Tories probably wish they'd never won in 1992. If in the long run this sets up a 1997 of the left, so much the better.

yea as much as it sounds like the whole 'actually I love being bodyslammed over and over' joke it's not the worst thing to come just short of properly taking the throne in this context. PM BoJo (god willing) is gonna have to preside over the UK shooting itself in the foot while screaming "YOU'RE WELCOME".

yes I know

But the impact of them not taking their seats is that not only are they not there, they're also not voting against them

The UKIP collapsing is so weird because in half the ridings they apparently (?) went Labour, in the other half they went Tory

Unless I'm interpreting this completely wrong

they need 50% + 1 of the people who actually show up to vote, and there are 643 people who actually show up to vote.

Not the "oops we lost 99% of the country but hey we have the white house for a couple years" bullshit the Democrats like to pull.

this is because all political power flows from the parliament. our tyranny hating founding fathers set up division of power in the united states so that one branch of government wouldn't control all the levers. this is probably really dumb, but i wouldn't know since i dont have a hoity toity political science degree

not really the greens' fault or the Lib Dems', that was an exceptionally hard seat for Labour to win.

the three kinds of elections + judicial system is pretty smart, the major issue is they didnt write a bunch of hard rules basically saying "president is simple majority, congressional districts shouldnt be dumb as gently caress and easy to gerrymander" if you fix those two things the senate protects small states from being trampled on while giving most of the power to an actual democracy and its harder to gently caress around with poo poo

i mean the electorate could also be batshit dumb and corruption still exists, but that rule system is altogether a pretty safe way of making sure your democracy is actually representative of the people while not letting a simple majority run the entire system willy nilly
