Labour's massively increased the number of seats they hold, and the Tories are stuck with a toxic, evil party that also wants the same brexit deal the left wing parties do. The DUP? What makes them toxic and evil? (american, never heard of them before now)

Orkin Mang posted:hold on. im not a united kingsman. did may call the election expecting to win more seats, but instead of winning more seats almost lost the election? because thats very funny ...and to expand on what others have said, the point is that the Conservatives were confidently expecting not just victory, but a substantial victory. Some pollsters were talking about 70+ seat majoritys. I can't stop giggling, every time I think about it.

Sydney Bottocks posted:The last 24 hours have been pretty good as far as political theater goes, on both sides of the Atlantic. Comey repeatedly dunked on Trump, and the Tories (despite being the larger party) didn't so much shoot themselves in the foot as they just shotgunned that fucker off. I really hope so. I'm super happy for my Brit friends but I'm still genuinely depressed about the state of my stupid loving country. Please let this matter, too.

The worst possible outcome is that the Tories reach 319. Then, subtracting the Sinn Fein MPs and both Speakers, they technically have enough MPs to govern alone.

Chimp_On_Stilts posted:Is there anything that forces Theresa May to step down, or is it just shame/custom without force of law? If she doesn't get challenged for the leadership, and as long as she can cut a deal with the DUP to get a Queen's Speech through parliament without getting voted down, it is perfectly regular and constitutional for her to remain as Prime Minister. It's even more likely than you might think, because what Tory would want to jump head-first into this dumpster fire?

My roommate just came back from the UK with the usual crap one brings back from the UK. Among the Fortnum and Mason tea tins and biscuits from Harrods and whatnot is a thing that is explicitly labeled an "iron brew macaroon". It is not a macaroon by any possible way of using that word. it is a mass of pure fondant about the size of a brick, presumably flavored with irn bru, and rolled in walnuts for some reason. I feel like somehow it's an allegory for this election you've had but I can't quite put my finger on it.
