Just wanted to congratulate you Brits on a pretty darn good outcome considering the utter despair people were justifiably feeling. Road ahead will be long so it's just a first step, but it's a pretty good one.

I think you'll see a very rapid break between the ideological Labour Right and the people who genuinely thought it was going to claw back votes. Both groups have just seen something else work and they have every motivation to toe the line.

The DUPs demands are going to be largely NI focused. What with the assemblys collapse now assured (and its not coming back while the DUP hold the balance of power) and direct rule on course for the end of the month all devolved powers are going to return to Whitehall so there's plenty the Tories can offer in that regard. National policy wise the DUP are keen on the pension triple lock, are cold on further welfare reform and will probably push aggressively for a statue of limitations for troubles related offences for soldiers - something already supported by Tory backbenches and the right wing press

Would the DUP making some kind of deal with the Conservatives convince any of the Sinn Fein MPs to actually sit in Westminster? It seems like a massive gently caress you to any Republicans in NI if they go ahead with this, so much for power 'sharing'

Corbyn's unexpectedly small margin of defeat should probably silence most of his Labour critics, victory has a hundred fathers and all that. Although to be sure there will be both some hardline neoliberals on the right as well as tankie dead-enders to the left who will refuse to see reason.

Vetitum posted:Would the DUP making some kind of deal with the Conservatives convince any of the Sinn Fein MPs to actually sit in Westminster? Nope, remember power sharing has already collapsed cause SF pulled out and has blamed the DUP for refusing to meet them halfway and has repeatedly said the assembly as it exists can not return. A Tory/DUP pact direct ruling NI from Whitehall is like an SF dream at the minute - their new hardball tactics are reaping huge electoral rewards and a boogeyman of that size will undoubtedly push more voters to them

Went to bed thinking Amber Rudd, Philip Davies and Anna Soubry were definitely gone and now it turns out they all survived, and some stupid fuckers let Zac Goldsmith back in. Bit depressing, but hopefully Kensington breaks the right way.
