Yeah, the best hope for May's camp right now is that no one else wants their jobs. Any UK goons want to comment on how the Torry position is shifted by this? A lot of MPs lost their jobs, but I don't know if the hard right and pro-brexit camps lost more people or the moderates. I'm curious if "hard Brexit" will even still be possible after this.

It has made any kind of compromise on Brexit much more difficult. Both the "we shouldn't leave at all" and the "deport everyone" camps in the Conservative party now have enough votes to effectively veto any government plans. So either we get a soft result that can somehow get cross-party support (unlikely), no agreement and thus no deal (unthinkable), or another election during the negotiations (comedy/tragedy option) (it's probably this one).

Pants Donkey posted:Although if I understand correctly, this election was Trump/Clinton lite in that nobody was super enthused with their options. Except this time the monster didn't win. Corbyn's popularity is actually a bit odd; he was massively popular when he was elected party leader (twice because his party immediately rebelled and held a second election minus a lot of his original voters, which he won anyway). then two years of the Tories, the media, and his own party attacking him, plus a couple legitimately bad moves on his part, tanked his reputation, before he made massive gains again leading up to this election. He's definitely extremely popular with some groups; youth turnout, last I saw, was 72% this time around in Britain. [Edit: Might be a bit lower turns out; estimates are high sixties to low seventies though, so still good.] Labour won them by 44%. Not won 44% of the youth vote, they beat the next party by that much there; Corbyn might have turned a generation into Labour voters. Plus, Labour did great this election; it was the SNP hemorrhaging seats to the Tories that let Tories reach a majority with the DUP/prevent a Corbyn coalition. Turns out being a single-issue party trying to get both the left and the right doesn't really work once that single issue is losing relevance, and with Scottish Labour being trash (some actually told their voters to vote Conservative rather than support Corbyn; it's hard to overstate how much they hate him, it basically is what people accused the Democrats of doing to Bernie and then some), the Tories made the most gains there. Though Labour got a bite of them too. Also yeah, as people said, basically any Brexit will destroy the Tory-DUP coalition, because there's no way to get a free Ireland-Northern Ireland border and not have freedom of movement with the rest of the EU, and that'd come with so many restrictions you're basically at the point of an "everything stays the same, except the Britian says it's not in the EU anymore, loses its EU reps, and loses the membership discounts they had received to keep them from being pissy babies in the past" non-Brexit Brexit. The DUP will not settle for anything less either; if they vote for anything to harden the I/NI border the Troubles will start again and also people will probably literally murder the DUP people who voted for it. Also the DUP are socially conservative as hell, and the Tories, despite not really being such, have been trying to paint themselves as "socially liberal, fiscally conservative" types to not alienate everyone under forty. Allying with the party that kept gay marriage out of Northern Ireland and catering to their whims... Well, from what I heard a DUP member actually said that the Tories don't want DUP policies getting mainstream attention back in England. Things could get even weirder because a lot of Tories didn't support Brexit and a few Labour MPs did (though I don't know how last night changed the numbers in those camps). British politics have been weird since the Brexit vote, but they could get even weirder if the Torries have to start looking for Leavers in other parties to counteract the Remainers in their own. Those votes aren't likely to come from SNP, the Lib Dems, or Northern Ireland either, so they may wind up in the bizarre position of having to court defections or cut deals with Labour to advance their own policies. It's been pretty fascinating to watch the ascendant right wing nationalists on both sides of the Atlantic completely and immediately undermine their own capacity to govern through a ceaseless stream of unforced errors. If it goes on much longer, I think the liberal smugness and schadenfreude might literally kill me. But yeah, bring on the Britoons. I usually hate them, but this morning's should be glorious. Mac's in particular is likely to be a masterpiece of shame, deflection, and self-deception.

He seems to be popular with the voters, unpopular with everyone who knows him personally. Turning the youth of Britain onto the fact that there's more to left-wing thought than "slightly more benefits" will be to the benefit of the future of the party and country.

Turning the youth of Britain onto the fact that there's more to left-wing thought than "slightly more benefits" will be to the benefit of the future of the party and country. He's especially popular with voters who know him personally, from what I've seen; the best way to get people to support Corbyn has been to let them see Corbyn themselves, not the media/Tory portrayal of him. Personal anecdotes in particular seem to usually be glowing: https://twitter.com/novaramedia/status/872510050551595009 The issue is that Labour was taken over by Blairites before, with Corbyn being one of the few genuine leftists left standing. So when he took power, it was him against most of the party, who thought they could get rid of him. But yeah, he's revived the UK left on the political level from what I can tell, and going forward that should be a great thing.
